Picked this guy up over at the Ruger forum. These new .44 specials are some darn fine sixguns. After getting it on paper (front sight is a little too tall I think, I had to jack up the back sight some) we went to the 50 and 100 yard range.
Mrs. Thumbcocker was acting as my spotter. This is a 44 oz soda cup at 100 yards. Shot standing from Weaver. Load was 429421 over 8.0 of power pistol. I have the parts to change out the grip frame trigger and hammer for a "B" word (don't want to upset .44 Man). May put a shorter front sight on and see if I can do something about the little bit of thread choke. Still it has earned a home here. 12 shots and 3 or 4 hits.

Nice. Been thinking of getting one of them for a minute myself. I'd go with the 5.5" bbl, but that's just me. I like it. Good on ya!

A few dozen j-words and the thread choke will go away. Congrats!

Is that a 5.5" stainless 44? I've heard of a few floating around but that exact model was never cataloged and was never even a formal distributor exclusive as far as I know. Good snag!

Yup 5.5 .44 special. Have a 4 5/8 that is a real shooter too. Elmer and Skeeter were right.

Mine in .44 has been a real surprise. At 21 yds., it's been shooting cloverleafs for 3 shots at 21 yds., with all bullets touching and overlapping. This was with a 240 gr. Oregon Trail SWC over 7.5 gr. Unique. To say I really like it would be an understatement, and it handles so much better, to me at least, than the std. Bhk, that it's really endeared itself to me big time. I REALLY like these guns. Have a .357 Anniv. model, but it's go the thread constriction, and won't shoot for sour apples. Ruger said they'd put a new barrel in it, but it wouldn't have the 50th Anniv. roll markings, and I just didn't want to do that. I may wind up doing it anyway, though. This one's constriction appears to be rather extreme. (sigh) Love the gun, but if it won't shoot, I lose interest pretty quickly. Got a great Old El Paso holster for it, too, with ctg. belt, and love the rig. Got to get it shooting so it'll be carryable, though. Great "river gun." The .44 just isn't needed at the river very often, and .357/.38 ammo is lighter. Love them both. Just wish the .357 would shoot already.

Traded a couple of milsurps at my LGS/Pawn Shop for a stainless flattop 44 Spl with a 4 5/8 barrel. Haven't shot it yet, but it sure handles good.

I just sold one of these 4 5/8" Lipsey's Flattops in .45 Colt/.45 ACP and man I want to tell you now, it was one of the sweetest Rugers I have ever had my mitts wrapped around.

I didn't get to shoot it, but I was very impressed with the fit and finish, ZERO thread choke. I reamed and honed both cylinders to .4525" barely touched down with the 11° cutter in the forcing cone, installed a Wolff 30oz. trigger return spring and did a Bradshaw style trigger job where only a tad of the hammer hook is taken off so there is no creep but a clean break.

One of our members here bought it and this is his first single action so he got started on a really good foot with this flattop.

I have a pair of the Ruger Flattop .44 Specials. My first one is a 5.5" blued one. The second one is a 4 5/8" one. Either of them will shoot well under an inch at 25 yards. I keep them stoked with the Skeeter load (7.5 grs. of Unique behind a Mihec 250 gr Keith H&G #503). As good a field pistol as can be had, IMHO.

I'm with Dale on this one. I have a 4 5/8 blued that completely changed my opinion of the 44 special. In bye gone years I had had several other 44 specials and found them to be anything but special. IME, you had a much better chance of getting an accurate 38 special, 357 or 44 Magnum than you did a 44 special. The Ruger Flat Top, though, is very special. Mine loves the Skeeter load, but 5.4 grains of Red Dot under a 429-383 is lights out. For just plinking or shooting, I like the later, but before the lead-ban here in Commiefornia, I used to carry mine afield with the Skeeter load (429-421 SWC over 7.5 grains of Unique). With that load in that gun I feared neither man nor beast.169833169834

I bought one of the Lispeys bisley model 44 specials to make some holsters for. I managed to get it sighted in and tested with the skeeter load for accuracy and so far am in love! Guess I should make the holsters now!

Thumbcocker...here is my stainless 4 5/8 flattop that has been "Bisleyized".

You will probably love it.

I like mine a lot...I just prefer my Cimarron's... The Ruger's and Cimarron's all shoot the Skeeter or Power Pistol loads, lights out.
