Hi, it's Becky. I wanted to post some modern Christian music, but I like the older hymns too. Here are some of my favorites and please feel free to post your own music on here too!

I play keyboard in our church band and we play mainly New Christian Music at our contemporary services. But I still like the oldies better!

All good picks young lady. There are quite a few good artists out there now. Just missed a chance to see Crowder and was bummed about that.

If it was written before 1899, I don't want any part of it.

I especially dislike the modern 7 - 11 songs

Couldn't help but laugh at williamwaco's post, because I'm pretty much the same way. But that's just me, and a matter of taste, really, and not of fact. Music will always be a matter of taste, just like food. And both the foods we like and the music we like are mostly acquired tastes, and what we start out in life with tends to be what we like most. So us older geezers tend to just simply like what we were brought up with. But it's good to see the newer generations making a "joyful noise" in a way that they like. I've bot to admit, I love a good rock n' roll beat, or dem ol' blues.

So love what you like. All I think God cares about is that we DO it, and he's not particularly partial to any form, so long as it's earnest and honest. If I were younger, I'd probably be listening to it, too, right along with you. Sad fact is, I listen to talk radio when I'm out and about in my truck, and I miss the music I love so much. I just feel so much more of a need to be informed now, rather than just entertained, that I've practically stopped listening to much of any kind of music these days. And I DO miss it, too!

Prairie girl, Thank you so much. I find myself being a bit of curmudgeon, like some of the above, and then something just moves me, so I guess, I can like anything that "raises a joyful noise".

I should elaborate on my post # 8, many will disagree with me, some are even members of my family, but I believe in Reverence when I enter the Sanctuary of our Lord.

But thats just me.

I like the old ones , I'm old and lazy . I already know the words to all of them . The young folks are due their own praise music just like we old ones were in my opinion . In the process I have learned to enjoy much of the new .If it helps young folks in their faith I'm all for it .

The problem with a lot of the new music is that it can not be sung by a congregation. It is performance "art" and meant to be sung by artist with much greater talent than the average church goer. I have always judged what I sing by the words and then the music. I find a lot of new and old wanting in that respect. I do become angry when I am asked to sing the unsingable and the words to the new songs are plagarized from a great hymn of the faith. Let the old and the new stand on their own and don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I'll be 100% honest here....... I like it all! If it brings glory to God and speaks of His power and grace I am for it. I have a very old hymn book here at the house that brings tears to my eyes with the power of the hymns contained within it. I like the modern Christian music, the hardcore like I posted above, old gospel, Johnny Cash/Elvis gospel, alternative, and even some Christian rap. If it speaks of His redemption and glory and reaches out to that one stumbling lost soul because of the genre of Music it is, I say Praise God and worship at full volume if need be.

I know that the older folks like the older music (I don't blame you; I do too). My dad is in the group of the older folks and enjoys the older hymns but also like the newer ones too. My church sings both the new and older hymns, so the older ones get to sing the songs that they like and the younger ones the ones that they like. I like the modern and older hymn equally. If the modern hymns help the younger people to praise God, I think it is a wonderful thing. Hope ya'll enjoyed the music and thank you for replying.

As a choir member since I was 16 - I have sung the traditional and the modern. When I attended seminary classes I was a little surprised that I knew much of the theology being taught from the songs I had sung - the old traditional hymns. However, those of us who were raised on "The Old Rugged Cross and And Can It Be - take a listen to 10,000 Reasons. It is a hymn for today. I don't know how to post a link, but it is the first one on the list in the first song posted in the initial post.

I am 71 years old and am not religious, just a Christian. If it exaults the Lord bring it on. I must admit the punk type one of my grandsons plays is not my cup of tea, but I don't have to listen to much. I'll bet the music played in Solomon's Temple would not have appealed to my ear either.

Psalm 103:1-5103 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Thanks, JMort. Our Church sung that by having the men of the Church sing the first chorus. The men of the choir intorduced it the first time, then the men of the Church were invited to sing it, then the congregation joined for the rest of the song.

I was raised attending a United Methodist church where we sang three hymns per service that were finished up with an Ahmennn (and a 15 minute sermon!). While I have attended Assembly of God churches as an adult that major in the praise songs, the hymns are still my favorite. Hymns have more complex ideas and stir the intellect as well as the emotions.

Thanks, jmort. Good posts. Even though it's still not quite my cup of tea, I can't pan it. I simply gravitate toward the classics. That's all. And one thing I'll say for some of the newer stuff I've seen and heard, is that it seems most significant in the way it is sheerly defiant of Satan and evil. It seems to look Satan in the eye without fear or intrepidation, and simply worships joyfully, as we're all supposed to. Who among us couldn't like that?

This also reminds me of a lady in our church when I was a kid. She was of very humble beginnings, and was as close to a saint as one can get. I'd overheard that her husband, who never came to church with her, liked to drink and sometimes beat on her. She was bigger than he was, and there was some talk of her, when she fought back, beating the daylights out of him and throwing him out of the house in the cold winter! But she loved the Lord mightily! She sang in the choir, and when she did, she'd often lay back her head, and only the most priggish of music critics could have panned her efforts. She didn't always hit just the right pitch, but she sure did belt it out, and a blind man could have heard the earnestness in her voice. Her daughter is now a member, and she's a great gal. Was a real competitor in basketball despite being rather short for that game. She developed a "hoop shot" that compensated in part for her lack of height, and when they needed 2 points, it'd have taken a huge buffalo to keep her from the basket! I often tell her how much I miss her Mom, and she just smiles. Simple people have simple problems and deal with them in a simple way, which is often with what they know of the Christian faith.

Music doth indeed "have the power to soothe the savage beast." I need to listen to it more, and less of the news and talk shows. My two cousins have taken over their Mom and Dad's bluegrass "pickin' parties" they have several times a year. Their Mom and Dad are gone from us now, and these pickin' parties are held under their pickin' shed, and people come from many places just for their little get-togethers, often up to 500 or so. It's invitation only, but you can bring good friends, and they eat like kings and queens! Nobody EVER goes away hungry! And the atmosphere there is that of a really good church social. They play traditional bluegrass and gospel, and it is truly a moving experience just to be there. Them apples really don't fall far from the tree, do they?

In the past, I've had pickin' friends over and we'd crank up our tube amps and play our many guitars, mostly blues and the better early rock n' roll (before they took the roll out of it), and we'd cook and have a great time. I even got in a few decent licks a time or two! Now, we've dispersed all over Ga.! Get to see them occasionally, but never all in one spot at once. The best music ever will ALWAYS be that which you make yourself, and especially with friends. Even I've always figured music is kind'a like huggin' an' kissin'. You really don't have to be all that good at it to have a good time!

It's amazing how many truly good singers there are nearby, and there are some really great musicians around just about everywhere too. Good get-togethers like these are the absolute best you can find anywhere, and the most enjoyable way to spend time with frinds of like mind that there will ever be.

Here in the south, having folks for supper is a rite of passage for true friends, but doing that AND sharing some good music together truly bonds folks like nothing else I know of. It makes you friends to the end somehow. I think there's some "magic" in it.
