Has anyone had any problems with mounting a hammer extension on the older Marlin lever actions? The Uncle Mikes, Carlson's and Grovtec all seem to be too small. The hammer has a curve that goes down and does not allow the extensions to slide on the hammer.

Marlin changed the Model 336 trigger geometry & hammer shape during the introduction of the CBS (cross bolt safety) in 1984, thus resulting in the fact that (depending upon what year any particular Marlin 336 was made) a particular rifle may need one or the other type of offset hammer spur.

Sure would have been nice if that article would have told you what each of those 4 very different spurs fit.

It is a great article. I have been looking all over for the second one down from the top in the pic with no luck. The ones that I have found appear to be the others.

Regards.

Wow. Good thing I wasn't betting on the date that the cross bolt safety was introduced on the 336's. I would have been off by 10 years.

The companies that make the hammer extensions sale a "pre cross bolt safety" and a "post cross bolt safety" model. I think it was 1983 without looking. However, it did not work out for me.

As the article says there are three Marlin hammers, pre '57, '57-'82 and '83 up, the two that are made are readily available and fit well, if you have an older rifle you can modify a Winchester 94 spur to fit, I did this on my 1950 "G" code 336.

Wrench Man:

Thank you for the info and direction. I will look at the Winchester 94 spurs. This one of the reasons I joined this forum.

In the '60's (early) my dad got a 336 and took it to a gunsmith in Bangor, Me to have a scope mounted. He heated the hammer and bent it sideways rather than put on an extension - don't know if they were available then. I have that gun if somebody wants pics.

Great story, I'm sure that worked just fine for years.

I favor the groove tech over the others, cause they offer a better grip. I even use them on non scoped rifles.

The Groove Techs look better than the others that I have seen.
