Happy Memorial Day all,

I recently shot some ammo a buddy gave me.... Needless to say, my beloved 5906 needs a new barrel. A round was partially loaded with powder. The bullet lodged just past the throat area, about 1/8" into the rifling. I got the (please forgive me) FMJ bullet out with a lot of resistance. This gun was once very very accurate with my home made 125's. Now it is shoots pretty terrible.

Any advice? Anyone have a 5906 barrel they can part with?

Thanks, Marc

Sad to lose a barrel. Lucky that you didn't put one behind it and lose the gun, or worse, injure yourself. Lesson learned on using a friends ammo. I only use my own for this reason.

Hi, glad it didn't cost more than the barrel as 500MAG said.

If you have no luck here try Smith and Wesson directly, or go to the Smith and Wesson forum. I do not believe that parts are available for that model thru S&W but maybe someone on the forum would know.

Good luck in your search.

At one time Bar-Sto made VERY NICE aftermarket barrels for the S&W 9mms with metal receivers. If nothing else works out, that is another option.

Even a minor 'ding' to the rifling at the muzzle can ruin accuracy. If you damaged this area, re-crowning may regain some or all accuracy. You could spend a good chunk of change for a re-crowning kit, or try a search for 'DIY re-crowning' & get good results for a lot less cash. Light to moderate mechanical ability required.

If that doesn't do it, you'll probably need a new barrel.

I got a 'great deal' on a LE trade-in 5906 years ago. It shot 'Open Cylinder Choke' patterns instead of groups. Re-crowned it & groups shrank quite a bit, but still had a lot of vertical stringing. Aft engagement surface of barrel hood barely touched the slide. So, I ended up getting a new barrel.

Something you'll want to check is the width of the hood at the back of the barrel. If it's about 0.395", great! You've got a late model 5906 & can get a new tube from Midway or Brownells, (when they have 'em in stock).

I have an early 5906 with 0.275" hood. Had to wait a while for one to show up on G/B. Took about 20 minutes judicious stoning of the rear hood aft face to get it to go into battery. Shoots nice tight groups now. If you don't have some mechanical aptitude or just can't leave the dremel tool alone, take it to a gunsmith for fitting if it doesn't just 'drop in'.

Glad you found one those guns are to good to let die. I bought a surplus police trade a few years back and gave it to my daughter. She loves it!
