300 Savage

I have a Savage 99 that I want to run cast through. I have 2 molds for 30 cal.
1 is a 150 gc the other is a 170 gc looking for load data. I have books and use Hodgdon site a lot but I'm not finding much for the 300 what do you suggest?

Get a Lyman manual! 49 or 50 Edition of the regular manual should have some cast data. 4th Edition of Cast should also have good data.

Does the 49th for sure have 300 savage in it? I know the older ones do, but not sure about the 49th or 50.

use 308 data.
your not running jacketed loads and 16-17grs of 2400 makes the same amount of gas volume in the 300 savage as it does in the 8 mauser and 30-06 case.
probably a bit better velocity spreads in the smaller case though.

I was able to get out to my shop this morning after heavy rains and look in my old Lyman reloading manuals and they have some good recipes.

Yes the Lyman 49 has load data for cast boolits in 300 savage

the 300 and the 308 are not a direct straight across load for load and usually the start data for the 308 is about the end data for the 300.
the fast powders [red-dot, unique] are where you get a little caught up but the slower stuff like 2400 on down will give you a good start by using the 308's data.
but by comparing case volumes and reducing a bit you can easily get by.

30-30 data is a bit closer than 308 data is when using the fast and the slower [4064 type powders]
and is also a good place to look for powders you have on hand.

10.0 Unique, 16 gr of 2400. Start there and increase a few grains, one grain at a time.

These two loads have a HIGH likelihood of producing excellent results in any of the bottleneck cartridges
designed from about 1892 through about 1925 or so, anything from .300 Sav to .30-06 or so, and all
the stuff in between. Any bullet wt, moderate velocities, around 1400-1700 fps depending.

Both the old Ideal 31141 and the Ranchdog 165 grain bullet worked well in mine with 28 grains of IMR 4895 and a little tuft of Dacron filler. I found the short neck to not be as problematic as everybody always says.

There's plenty of load data out there and a guy should be able to look at .30-30 and .308 data and interpolate between the two for a starting point.

I recently tested the 311008, 115 gr plain base and powdercoated over Trailboss and it worked well enough that I re-regulated the sights and loaded 50 more. Unique is good, too, but I get vertical stringing if I don't use some Dacron.

With these lite loads and GRUMPA's reformed brass, some lucky soul will be shooting this fine old rifle into the next century!!

18 - 20 grs IMR 4227 with 170 will have you in the 1600 fps range. 23 grs IMR 4198 with the 170 will put you in the 1700 fps zone.

I've run cast through four of my 99s and all have been good shooters with cast. I've killed eer with three of those four using cast. I think you're gonna like shooting that old .300.
