So dad sneaks off from me at the flea market the other day, and when he comes back he has a boogered up CVA hawken pistol kit he picked up for $25. Said "Happy Birthday, I didn't know what else to get you since you've got everything". Someone had basically forced the kit together with no fitting, the wood had finish on it but wasn't taken down to size, no metal finish, hammer was not striking the nipple, lock was gummed up to the point it would barely engage the sear when cocked, trigger had 1/2" of slop in it, trigger guard was broken in half etc.

I spent all evening working the wood down to size, resetting the wedge pin escutions, bent the hammer until it struck the nipple correctly, brazed the trigger guard back together and brazed an extension onto the trigger to take up the slop, adjusted the trigger and put some cold blue on the barrel. It had never been fired and the bore was still bare metal inside, had a burr on the muzzle which I polished off but other than that all was well. The sights took some modification since it was shooting about 6" high with the rear sight at it's bottom most adjustment but with enough tinkering I got it on target. It likes 60 grain charges just as well as 40. I shot this 3 shot group at 25 yards off a blanket rest, to say I am pleased would be an understatement. 2 of the shots were 40 grains and the third shot was 60 just to see if there was a noticeable change in POI. .490 RB and .015 patch lubed with coon oil.

I wish my Lyman plains pistol would have shot this good!

That is a nice job. You did a really great job fixing it up and correcting the mistakes a neophyte made with it. I would be super proud of how well it shoots too. It does shoot really good.

Nice work! My father gave me one for Christmas around 1981 and one of these days I hope to quit looking at the box and put it together!

I love to see broken guns put back into usable shape. That's a really nice job you did.

I acquired a .45 derringer kit from a friend that was missing a few parts, but I did get it assembled, and have shot it a few times. Those BP single shots are a hoot!

Buckshot those are great shooters. But a word of caution to you. Even though you can shoot 50 to 60 grains
in them DON,T. I would not go over 45 grains. Reason is the stock will most likely crack over time. Ask me
how I know (wink).

Wish I could find those $25 treasures. You did a nice job there.

Thanks for the comments. I don't plan on making a habit of shooting 60 grain charges, just wanted to check poa vs poi with the heavier charge for my data in case I decide to try knocking over a coyote with it I'm sure the extra zip would be helpful.

Here is a CVA Kit Rifle by Jukar still boxed, that a bloke gave me sometime ago.It took a while due to mods to an attempt by someone to deactivate it by drilling a hole through the touch hole and driving a steel bar into it.I modified the breach to suit the amount I cut off at the breach.

To get Knocked up in the UK,someone wakes you possibly to go to work or somewhere. In the old days when I was young, factories would send a Knockerup to rouse workers for their shift.
