Buckshot Bill

So dad sneaks off from me at the flea market the other day, and when he comes back he has a boogered up CVA hawken pistol kit he picked up for $25. Said "Happy Birthday, I didn't know what else to get you since you've got everything". Someone had basically forced the kit together with no fitting, the wood had finish on it but wasn't taken down to size, no metal finish, hammer was not striking the nipple, lock was gummed up to the point it would barely engage the sear when cocked, trigger had 1/2" of slop in it, trigger guard was broken in half etc.
I spent all evening working the wood down to size, resetting the wedge pin escutions, bent the hammer until it struck the nipple correctly, brazed the trigger guard back together and brazed an extension onto the trigger to take up the slop, adjusted the trigger and put some cold blue on the barrel. It had never been fired and the bore was still bare metal inside, had a burr on the muzzle which I polished off but other than that all was well. The sights took some modification since it was shooting about 6" high with the rear sight at it's bottom most adjustment but with enough tinkering I got it on target. It likes 60 grain charges just as well as 40. I shot this 3 shot group at 25 yards off a blanket rest, to say I am pleased would be an understatement. 2 of the shots were 40 grains and the third shot was 60 just to see if there was a noticeable change in POI. .490 RB and .015 patch lubed with coon oil.

I wish my Lyman plains pistol would have shot this good!
