A light coat of 2 cycle motor oil works I perfer the synthetics. beeswax can be used or a high temp oil or grease. By light coat use a q tip to apple a very light coat to top of blocks and bottom of sprue plate. then use a dry q-tip to even out and remove any excess. when done it should just have a hint of wet look to it. A very light drop on the hinge and handle joints and your good to go.

But seriously, 2 cycle mix oil, Full Synth, is one of the best sprue plate lubes.

I have run steel olds dry without any problems.

aluminum I wouldn't think of not using something.
I have been using NICKLE anti-sieze on my molds without any issues.
apply with a Q-tip like you would the 2 stroke oil, A/C ester oil works very well also.

When I feel the need to lube my sprue plate which is rare, I use Amzoil Synthetic ATF. I've had a quart of it for about 10-15yrs now and it's still almost full to the top. When lubin the sprue plate, just a "DAB" will do. I use a tooth pick, dip it into the bottle, and get just a drop on the end. If you use much more, it will weep down into the cavities, then you'll have problems. My rule of thumb is "If you don't think there's enough lube on it, that's more than enough"

and add it with boolits in the cavity's when the mold is hot.

I would just start casting and see what happens. If you see lead sticking to the sprue plate, or smearing on the blocks under the sprue plate, touch the wick of a candle to the offending area to put a tiny amount of wax there. Place it where it won't get into the cavity as the sprue plate closes. I use the candle I've fluxed the metal with, so the wick is full of wax and the candle is always handy.
