Went to the Allentown PA Forks Of the Delaware May gun show. I decided to go to Cabellas for some Powder. I wanted to Try AA5744. . The shelves were completely stocked. All types and all weights. . The only problem It was all New priced powder. Sort of sticker shock. Since I was there I picked up 2 1 lb canister . @ $37.99 Per. . The only shortage was Old price Powder . . There was a lot Of shocked faces looking over the selection. Powder has Now become a Traded commodity. price prevailing @ time of purchase.

That's that high priced Canadidian powder. Best price I ever saw was $221/8 pounds so you didn't do too bad. The other double base extruded powders like 2400 are in short supply. They like making Spherical powders better.

It Will make you a better shooter, it's premium quality powder after all, not like my old AA#9. :-)

Cabela's always wants a little more... How do you think they bought that full elephant mount?

a pound of AA#9 is like 26 bucks.
a pound of red-dot is 22 bucks. [unless you buy it by the 8 lb jug then it's 18.62 a lb or 149.00]
a pound of rifle powder is about the same as the #9 unless you buy it in a jug then it's 189.00 for 8 lbs. [@23.75 a lb]
the 8 lb jugs per lb are what they were a pound bottle price a couple of years back.
or strangely 25 bucks a jug more for both powders.

it's a store thing I have seen jugs of titegroup marked 209.00 when we all know it's a bit cheaper than the other powders.
strange part was #-9 was a dollar a lb cheaper then every where else at the same store. [shrug]

Signed up for Bass Pro email. They are expensive but once or twice a month they email a $10.00 off $40.00 in store purchase coupon. Their price for IMR 4227 is $38.00 / lb. Buy a pound and a box of CCI primers ($4.00) & you wind up paying $32.00 + tax. Almost reasonable.
Every month or so they email a $20.00 off for email purchases of $100.00 or more. No shipping charge, NO HAZMAT charge if you pick up order @ store. With those type discounts a small volume purchaser can get decent prices once in a while.
What I find unbelievable is they have IMR4227 on store shelf, I order on line w/free ship to store, a week later I get an email that my order is at store. I go to pick it up, it's in a box that was MAILED to store and they paid a HAZMAT fee to send it. Not exactly a Sound business practice.
I only purchase / order stuff from them that would have a HAZMAT fee ordered elsewhere.

Correction:
Bass Pro is at $35.98 for 1 lb. IMR 4227.
Went there yesterday, they had Federal .22 cheapo match 40 gr for $19.99 a box (325 rounds). Got the last two boxes and used my expires today $10 off coupon.
Including tax it worked out to $.052 per round.

Last powder I bought at Cabelas years ago, was competitively priced. Now?? YIKES!!

I dunno, they had a stellar deal on S&B primers awhile back and if I recall I had an email for either free shipping or hazmat. As with most retailers these days you can't just shop when you want it. I try to maximize my deals when shopping at these places, but sometimes you just have to have *that* item.

Cabela's has had several pistol powders and some rifle powders on sale in the last few weeks. The prices that i have seen on the powder is a lot cheaper than most stores in our area. """And I'm only one mile from the store ! ( Also i can get my walking in per the doctor)

It's best to time a Cabela's powder purchase with their sales, and using the $20 off a $100 purchase (or similar) coupon.

Don't know where you are but Bass Pro in Bristol,TN. has several 1 lber's of 2400 for 27.99 ea. I bought a pound of CFE223 for my 8mm because it likes it and that was the first I had seen in a while for 31.99 pound. Prices on a pare for this area. Also if you buy powder online you have to pay hazmat and shipping. Not worth it for 1 or two pounds.

The prices at the Hamburg Cabela's isn't any worse than other stores in the area. There is a small gun shop about 15 minutes from there. Really great prices on guns but more expensive on powder. Then there are places like King Shooters Supply in KOP. Their prices are virtually identical to Cabela's. It's normal to see no price break for an 8# jug. The only deals are a few vendors at shows and the internet. Internet prices have never been a reality around here.

FYI: Every place I've seen 5744, it's always more expensive than other powders. If other powders are priced that high at $37.99/lb, I wouldn't buy from them. 5744 is supposed to be good powder, but I can't imagine it's that much better than 2400.

Well, at least for handgun powder, they are well competitive with bass pro and all of the Lgs. You can buy cheaper if you search and order a large quantity

Yeah I noticed that the reloading powders have gotten more costly too. But they tend to put some types on sale from time to time. You might be able to get a better deal on something you can use from time to time. For this Memorial Day weekend, Cabelas upped the veterans/military discount to 10% from the normal 5%. The Cabelas out here nearby has the Hodgdon CFE 223 powder on sale for $22.99 at this time. It can be useful if you have load data to match your guns. I figured it was a slow mover as it is relatively new and so everyone was reluctant to try it.

I'm in a state of denial when I buy powder. I just buy it and remove the price stickers so I won't ponder over it. Same with primers.

I'd get on that 223 powder.
it's popular around here.
I'd buy another jug without hesitation if I can ever beat someone to it.
green-dot, bulls-eye, and unique are right there but the cfe-223 hole is empty.

I refuse to buy reloading supplies locally. The only big-box that carries powder/primers is 'Field & Stream' and they carry only a few powders; all overpriced by, at least, 15%. The only 'full-service' LGS in the county charges about the same simply because, for most local shooters, he's 'the only game in town'. There is, however, a GS in small town about an hour's drive south that carries a full array of supplies at, pretty much, 'suggested retail' and I'm usually down that way every six weeks or so.

I stopped in the Cabela's in Dundee, MI on the way home from vacation and picked up the three pounds of HS6 they had on the shelf. I think they were about $26 or $27 a pound. Along with 2 boxes of WLP primers and a box of plated boolits for my ammo finicky Kahr carry gun. (I just couldn't be bothered to throat the barrel for a gun that rarely gets fired and only sees factory Speer Gold Dot).

Want to hear a weird one?? For the longest time it seems like every time I go looking for powder for the .45 Colt, nobody EVER had any HS6! It was like driving through town and catching EVERY red light red! I have heard of HS6 in .45 Colt by many sources, I have WANTED to use HS6 in .45 Colt for 25yrs or more, and in all that time, this visit to Cabela's is the FIRST TIME that I have come away with any HS6! Beats the carp out of me how such a peculiar coincidence can keep a 25yr dry spell running on one kind of powder. True story...

I call BS on the OP. Cabela's has average prices on their powders and it's in stock. The particular type you may want may not be there because 144 people beat you to it. Are you going to pay a little more? Yes. It's a retail outlet - not a wholesaler. Cabela's isn't Powder Valley and if it's so cheap at Powder Valley why don't you just buy it there?

The only good place "nearby" for me is a dealer nearly 100 miles away. He has stock and prices better than any place closer. When I go over to visit my daughter, I stop in and stock up on what is needed.
If I buy $100 worth of supplies I have more than saved my gas money.

By chance are you referring to Dave's Pawn in Pekin? If so the new owner has stated that he is going to continue to carry the same items as Dave did. When we go it's always $250.00 to $400.00 worth. Good shopping.

Yes, I am. The new owner now accepts credit cards also making it even easier to get large quantities.
It will be interesting to see how his prices match up with what the previous owner did. So far they are still very good.

DougGuy, I started using HS6 about a year ago in the 45 Colt. It is now my go to powder in that Cal.

Powder and primers are the only thing at normal prices in my local Cabela's. Their prices on used guns are beyond stupid.

Like anything you have to be there at the right time. I agree that their prices are usually high. But I've been able to get a few deals over the years.

I see that the Springfield Cabela's powder price is about in the middle around here, A little more at the LGS, a little less at the local BiMart's, their brass is cheaper, $ on used guns is hit and miss?, usually MISS!, I did pick up a nice Ruger M77 Hawkeye African in 375 Ruger for a fair price last month.

Many years ago, there used to be some LGS's that had reloading supplies. They normally sold stuff at retail prices with occasional sales. Nowadays, around here, it is the big box stores only now. You would have to buy off the internet or mail order otherwise. I don't think that the LGS's can afford to tie up their precious capital in long term stocking of reloading supplies. Years ago they could but not in today's environment. Some states even got greedy and started invoking inventory taxes on businesses, thus they couldn't keep stuff on the shelf long term anymore.

its cheaper to cough up the dough and pay to have everything shipped to my door.

bass-proless. is 60 miles away.
sportsman's paradise is 80 miles.( like cabals but no flash to add to the prices) and cabalas is 4 hrs away.
lots of little mom and pop places products are hit and miss... mostly special order. but even the closest one is 15 miles away and my pu truck is bigger then his whole front room.

I live in California and we've been through a long dry spell, not only with water, but also powder and primers. Prices at the few local sources are off the wall. A while ago (before Obama's 2nd term) I did a group buy from Powder Valley with a guy who organized it at my gun club. I bought 4 or 5 lbs of powder and some primers and my share of the shipping/hazmat charge was $11. That can be a good way to resupply but you need someone to quarterback it.

I've noticed that several vendors, Natchez Shooters Supply, Champions Choice and others have been sending me ammo-related emails, but when I look closely, the only difference between now and a year ago is that now they have powder in stock - the prices are not that good. It reminds me of the story about the woman who goes to her butcher shop and orders some $2 groundbeef. The butcher says "I'm sorry, but I'm fresh out." So, she goes to another butcher shop but finds that the ground beef there is $4 a pound. She says to the butcher "The shop down the street only charges $2 a pound but he's fresh out. How come you charge $4?" The butcher replies "Well, when I'm fresh out I only charge $2 too."

My most recent purchase was a pound of Bullseye for $20 from my gun club. Now that primers and powder are more available, I'm going to slowly build up a good supply, anticipating the possibility of 1) A democrat presidential win, and 2) a possible California state law requiring background checks to buy ammunition, a ban on internet ammo purchases, and other truly evil provisions of a ballot measure created and produced by Gavin Newsome, the Lt. Governor. If Hillary wins, buy Smith & Wesson and Ruger stock!

That's why you visit Tony at TNT reloading or go to the Oaks Pa. show. Went a few weeks ago. Couple reloaders were getting out of the hobby. Unique $10 lb. 2400 $10 lb. Titegroup $20 lb. Hit the primer lottery with various rifle and pistol primers. Bought like 8,000 and averaged $10 per 1000!
