Added another Hotrod renegade to the stable, just got it done. Stainless Green Mountain .50 Cal LRH 1:28 fast twist barrel, lyman 57SML Peep, Lyman 17AHB Globe front with lee shavers insert. I will be shooting the S&W 500 440 grain bullet paper patched with 2 wraps of 9# onion skin paper and sized to .498, my only hold up at this point is the .498 bullet sizing die i had to special order from Lee, they said about a month.
I got a good deal on another .54 Cal Renegade so i grabbed it for this project, it was an old 4 digit serial # pre warning gun, the .54 barrel is in amazing shape! I also ended up buying a really nice .54 Cal TC Hawken, actually i bought it a couple days ago with the intentions of using it for this Hotrod build, but after getting it all cleaned up i decided it would be a shame to not keep it as is and enjoy it, so i ended up going back and making an offer on the old Renegade. I now have 2 Hotrod Renegades, a .45 and .50 Cal. The .498 sizing die cant get here fast enough, im chomping at the bit wanting to get out and shoot this .50
Again a BIG thanks to Idaho Ron for all his help and inspiration to make these builds! From his rifle setups to his paper patching and sizing, I have watched his videos and followed him, i was amazed when i seen him consistently hit a little steel plate out to 300 yards! I knew from that day i was gonna build a gun identical to his and try it for myself. Thank you Ron!

man do i love these kinds of post. i have a hot rod extra one now new sitting in the corner of the living room, if i could ever find the time to post on castbollits for sale, it is going to be up for sale. i have too many of these and this one would make some one very happy. they are so reliable and easy to load and shoot. and the accuracy doesnt end at 150 yards. my main hot rod is a 50 cal 1/28 twist which i pp and will never ever sell. i also love reading every thing ron posts. pp is growing wonderful thing happening with muzzleloader shooters. its not rocket science and it really really works.

There's one stil on the hoof Ron, he'd work huh? I have seen bucks like that every year the last 5 years. The only reason I shot that oddball spike on one side is because he was such an odd ball, I seen way nicer bucks and had plenty of time left to hunt. That buck on my trail cam is in a farmer friends field and that is a salt block for the cattle, I had seen that buck cross the Rd one morning at daylight coming from that area, I set my trail cam up and got him and another buck that was very respectable as well! I would guess that buck to go 160ish, I seen 2 bucks come in the sport shop that were very respectable at 188 and a 191

they don't. you have to find them either used or new-old-stock.

Any of those would work, I have never shot a WT.

There web site list octagon barrels, but not the 1/28 twist, just the std 1/70.

Rfd, NICE looking rifle! I like the spacer under the peep, yours looks to be exactly opposite of idahorons, i need to come up with a spacer like that, i am using thin stainless washers to shim the 57 to run straight in line with my barrel, 3 washers in the front to 1 in back, as idahoron has stated before, the 57 peep tends to leans forward a bit without being shimmed

the tangs on the Lyman/Dixie/Cabelas/Investarms guns have more curve in them. so if you order the 57GPR you get the exact same sight but you also get the corrective spacer & longer screws to accommodate it.

you might could contact Lyman to see if you could buy the spacer as a replacement part.
