I have a mold I ordered from Al for my two older Mosins, both carbines, it is a 200gr bullet and I have not cast with the mold yet.
Well I sold the Mosins and bought better ones, like unissued Finnish M39s etc.
But now I have a great mold that will drop at .316, at least this is what it was made to.
I slugged all the bores this weekend, and they are all tight and coming in at .310, I still have one M44 to slug but it is also the unissued variety so I expect it to be right at .311.
Now that said, I have a .309, .311 and .315 size dies. Am I right to assume that going from .316 to .312 is too big of a jump?

Try it. Depends on the hardness of your alloy, the strength of your press, and the build of your body!

Cast some. I doubt if your mold will drop as it is stamped due to alloy temp, alloy formulation, etc. Go from there.

Will do.

9w1911,

A Simple Solution is to get a SMALLER diameter mould and be forever happy. CHOKING Cast Boolits down many thousands has never worked for me. Just saying...

I agree, that is why I was asking, I am sure someone here needs a .316 200 gr mold and a .315 sizer. I was more concerned with making the lube grooves too shallow, but I also agree with Banger, as I have not cast with the mold yet.

You state the bores slug out at .311 but what do the throats measure that is the question . If the throat measurement is close use the mould you have if the nose is t too large . You can also use a alloy with more soft lead to cast a hair smaller .

To keep the lube grooves from collapsing, fill with lube first with a large diameter sizing die, then run them through to the desired size.

You should size to the throat diameter. The boolit will be swaged to the bore diameter when fired. Sizing to the throat prevents the boolit from cocking and entering the bore crooked.
