454190 in 45-70 Encore loads?

I have a 454190 that casts .458-.459 with WW that I have shot with my big throated S&W 25. I have an Encore 45-70 rifle that with 400gr or heavier boolits has very respectable recoil. I got to thinking (which in my case can sometimes be dangerous) that a lighter boolit about 250grs. might be alittle more pleasant to shoot just plinking. Did a search only load I came up with was 7.0 grs of unique. Anybody have any other suggestions? They would be appreciated. Thought about starting loads for the 457122. Have 2400,RL7, IMR 4759, and 3031, among others. thanks

All of the powders you listed can be made to work, as can H4895 (which would be my choice). Not knowing how experienced you are at loading, I can only advise that you proceed with caution. What you want to do is neither difficult nor especially hazardous, so it's a good learning experience. I suggest you get a copy of Paul Mathew's book "Forty Years with the Forty Five Seventy." He loads everything from round balls to teeth rattlers.

Do you have a chronograph? You should keep your muzzle velocities above 800 fps, 1000 fps would be a better minimum.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will look into the book, sounds interesting. I don't have a chronograph but its on my list. I'm thinking 1100-1200 fps. Would you use fillers (dacron)? thanks again

No, I neither use nor recommend fillers.

With a 405gr bullet you might want to start with 5 .5 grs of Unique.and work up from their.

I'm at work so I can't tell you the load, but I shoot the Gould HP (457122) in front of 3031 right at 1000-1100fps out of my Katadin. It is nice to shoot. Several girls like it!
