Hey guys,
Just wanted to know if you guys think a Springfield 1873 would be adequate to take a Bison, I would be using black powder only and cast bullets.

It worked very well 140 years ago and as far as I know the bison didn't get any tougher.

is this a history test?
if the boolit starts with a 4 [in diameter and weight] and there 50+grs of powder behind it I think you'll be just fine.

Quite a few were used back in the day. The Army would even give ammunition for free.

The Trapdoor Springfield in both the 50-70 and 45-70 killed a very large percentage of the Bison populations in the late 1860's through 1870's.

In actual practice on buff it will penetrate the skull of an 1100 pound critter and go through to break the 3rd vertebrae in the neck. Side to side it will go through both shoulders. On a raking shot it will go from behind the rib cage to lodge in the front shoulder bone after breaking it. This is the standard military load of a 405 bullet with 66 grains of FFg Goex and bees wax and bear oil lube. We have used this load for many buff over the years and the occasional beef critter too.

If you want to make a Native American mad, ask them if it will kill a buff.

I heard those things will just bounce right off the hide of a bison. He he
