Today traded at LGS for K 22, 1950's era I think, 5 screw, milled lines on rib on top of barrel,6", and target hammer, very fine checkered. Original grips, bluing that is thinning but mostly all there, nice case colors on hammer and trigger, whish has fine lines on it for good grip. Bore is pristine, so are cylinders, shoots great!! It has no model no, just the K prefix in front of the serial number on the butt, .22 long rifle on the barrel. On the inside frame when the cylinder is open has the numbers 686883 stamped, and same on the cylinder arm inside, and on top of the cylinder it has numbers stamped where you load the .22s in, between the cylinders, by the cartridge recess for the rims, has .227.90 stamped one time. I was wondering if this was a special order, or proofed for overseas sales etc. The gun is very tight, operates very smoothly, appears to have been shot little, carried a lot. Anyone have a idea how to tell what year. I have been looking for one of these, after shooting Johnson 1942's nearly identical handgun last year when visiting him, finally found one and traded a nice rifle to it. Rogers revolver is hands down the most accurate .22 Smith I have ever shot, or any .22 revolver for that matter. I plan on keeping it, and may reblue it myself. All you S&W collectors chime in here and help me.

Hi,

I think you have a 1966 revolver. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/SmithWessonMpRevolverModel10/posts/471257209590018

K658,987 – K715,996....1966

Five screw and no model number dates it to before 1957, IIRC. The S&W forums had a serial number to date cross reference list, I believe.

They were top of the line target revolvers when they were made.

The matching numbers on the yoke, cylinder and frame are for keeping the parts matched for final assembly. I forget what the other numbers are on the cylinder.

The serial number will be on the flat bottom of the square butt grip frame.

The serial number is stamped on the gun on the butt, back of the cylinder, bottom of the barrel, under the extractor, and on the inside of the right grip panel. It starts with a 'K' which may be separated somewhat from the rest of the number. K 2279XX would be about 1954 production.

The numbers are also the serial number so this gun is serial number K686883.

My K-22; 5 screw s/n is K2503XX. All references indicate latter half of 1955 and it does not have a model #.
Something is amiss with the numbers on the K-22 listed above.

The s/n should also be on the rear of the cylinder and on the ejector rod flat on the bottom of the barrel just in front of the frame.

Whats the number stamped at the bottom of the grip frame?

I just dug out my five screw K22 to look at. The Serial Number is K133XXX on the butt and rear of the cylinder. The assembly numbers on the crane and inside the crane recess on the frame match each other, but not the serial number. In my opinion, if the S/N and assembly numbers match, you have a one in ten million gun.

A true "5-screw" should be pre-1957. The source/root serial number is the stamping on the bottom of the grip frame, all other numbers are either derivative of that number or are assembly numbers.

Guys long time getting back. Serial # on butt, is same on cylinder, and under barrel flat! It is a 5 screw, from other S&W forums, late 1953- early 1954. Very tight, smooth as swiss watch to operate.

VERY GOOD era of production quality--some of the best examples extant come from that time period. I have a pre-27 357 Magnum of roughly that same vintage, and it is a jewel.

Nice revolvers, I have a Pre M 18 mfg'd in 51' and a 4 screw M-17 mfg'd in 1960.

Personally I would forget the re-blue. That's just me, but your call.

My view also, unless done by the S&W factory.
