2016 Hog Hunt.

4/28
Is this week ever going to be over .......
Here I sit at work ,supply and demand. ..... no demand I hold down a chair, waiting impatiently as all get out . The guns are selected, loads quadruple checked then confirmed . All hard cased waiting to be placed in the truck (see how I didn't load them in the truck?), ammo has been selected packaged and canned and is waiting with its correct tools . Tires checked ,fluids serviced, new wiper blades (the desert is hell on them), clothes packed , extra socks and boots (it's going to be wet.) . Spare gear for 3 new hunters , including vests ,hats, and lights.

Dad called yesterday. ..." I can't find my presses, dies ,brass or powder for the 25 . I guess I'm going to have to buy a box . I did find 6-7 boxes of 257 Roberts brass and a brand new bag of 100 ......" . See this face ? This is me not loosing my mind and not throwing my phone into the next county after begging and digging for a few pieces of 257 R for 6 months . Notice how you didn't hear me say ya know if you had even zones for stuff that was like mat'l you wouldn't have these problems.
* Then this morning reminds me how shooting cast bullets causes leading and messes with the accuracy.* Then tells me Mom shot a 3" off hand 50 yd group with that leaded up 357 Marlin I swapped him for the A5 3 yr ago, but it's about 4" high . Ya think ! I was dialed in with a 358-158 RNFP Lee over Unique for 1410 at 100 and Mom was shooting 14.0 H110 over a Speer 170 HC at 1400 fps at 50 yd .
*I have fully enhanced my calm , I will not be cranky, I will not even try to explain antimony wash ,low pressure carbon, or how he basically just scoured the seasoning off the frying pans and that the rifle may take gobs of shooting to get back on track ...... no I'm going home at lunch and finishing up the loading of the truck ,check the tires once more ,pour in the can of Bars Leak, top off the fuel ,stack in the full gas cans, get the chargers on board for the phones and pad ,clothes ,misc gear and ammo. The I'm going to get a few last minute items boxed up to ship tomorrow from some point down the road probably Vegas .

4/28
The evening
Everything is loaded , everything is loaded all is settling in to place .

Really 1 mud puddle in the whole township and the kids apparently rolled in it . 7&9 ,why did they need to drag half the mud through the house ?
Now the kids are puking ,and just in time for bed ......
Time line predicts I will be heaving some time between Tucson and El Paso. .. huhuha no passo, blows chunko.* :)

4/29
Up early , just 3 packages to go in the truck and we're ready to roll.

Dinner time

WHT is wrong with city dwellers ,they don't know how to merge ,have no concept of personal space or traffic spacing , really spacing lights on on ramps ?
Ms had a little bout of whatever the kids had so we had 3 extra stops getting to Vegas and lost an hour there . Phoenix was a disaster there has to be another way around almost 2 hours to get past that zoo. 250 miles short tonight .

An otherwise uneventful day on the road .

4/30

On the road by 530 ....... yeah ok , right not happening.
Maybe gas station by 6........

640 out of the gas station. ..... wait what time zone am I on ?
MST into CDT so loose 3 hr into Tx .......

Extra stop in NM for gas the* 86 Oct in Tucson us 3 mpg .
Quartering head wind across most NM . Gas prices all over 1.899 to 2.259 . Out about Tx 215 we took a bounce in a pot hole and gator backed a trailer tire . Got that changed and dumped in 10 gallons of gas from cans . My Folks canceled on me not long after the gator back ...... dammit all. The trailer isn't digging the 900 # in spite of being rated for 2000 # .

1115 pm checked into a randomly sellected room in San Antonio.* Gotta get a spare tire , hunting license and my bootleg Tx* beer in the morning.

5/1

On time for continental breakfast. ..... it was supposed to have rained all the way across, nothing but blue skies and impacted bugs . Looks like we'll get the bugs soaked up and washed off.
Almost lunch time .
Waiting on the tire . We have the licenses ,feed ,full gas , munchies and soon boot leg Lone Star ..... really no beer before noon on Sunday ?* I miss Strawberry mararitas with my Spanish omlete at 530 Sunday morning because.
Finally . 2 hr to get the tire mounted ........*
Still no rain to get the other 6 lbs of bugs off the truck .
Check was quick and easy like we've done this before .
Checked the sights against the ammo actually in the guns ,check and all aces . Chatted with some rookies, met the crew ,had dinner ..... well I didn't have to cook so it's not all bad .

1st hunt ,out at 700 in at 945 .
We get to our blind and this tore up, walking jerky, looking boar walks in like he owns the world ....... umm mm pass ....
The 1st sounder wanders in with 25 or so hogs and stops about 60-70 yd right in the gap between the 2 groups of exotics with price tags a lot like a whole pay check . Go for it.* There was a good looking trio of boars in black and 2 more that were bigger .......click ...... I guess I short stroked 96' 257 Roberts when loaded it . Apparently the action rattle is what was scary ,not the click or the green light.* They made a run for it but 10 min later they're* back . I set up on 1 of the big light colored ones and wait for the inevitable head lift ...... it comes the the 1st stage is gone ,exhale, squeeze ,elk head in the scope and necks and eyeball and shoulders ........ and the sounder scattered. ......
So ends day 1 @ the ranch ,no hog and down to 5 hunts .

5/2
0545 roll out, on the blinds at 630 ........

530 who's on coffee detail, slackers ......
Coffee is done ...... better ..... bunk mates up ....... chamber a round this time .

Saw couple of lil' bitty pigs 1st off but they were barely above the grass , the grass ain't very high.
Ms foot is killing her, the walking is too much on the lingering bone repair. I'm glad I have a Ms that likes to come along .

Your wondering about Ammohead ? I'm going say he has been a trooper ,2 days in a car with next to strangers and all of our ......umm.... quirks .

Next up spot ,swing and pop.

Ok maybe I was just a little to excitable . Apparently I can't shoot for beans with witnesses.* All by myself I kill critters just fine ,wrecked organs , next to no meat loss or bone chips. Witnesses ,I have trouble with head shots with the barrel in its ear.

Ammohead got a nice 200# boar with a 25 yd shot head on with a 35 Rem with a 250 gr RCBS 35-250 SIL .

167483

Ammohead took another

Finally killed a 120 # sow at 90 ft . I slipped the bullet in just under her jaw and inside the left shoulder, out just behind the right .

167484

Ms just let out a whoop she killed a 100# about 2 min before the dinner call.
I bought her a sweet AR 15 in 6.8 SPCII set it up for her, she has a fused wrist with no flex ,worked up a load that does it all and she takes the dinosaur 1949 Savage* 30-30 with 60s Super X silver tip and kills a 115 # Russianish boar.* Way to go Mary Mo !

167485

Got another @ 96# tonight , bloodied the MTB 96' Mauser 257 Roberts . Dead, solid ,perfect . Of course I* remember now exactly why I shoot cast heavy and slow .

Very nice! Glad you brought home plenty of bacon.

We moved a little north from San Antonio. Where were you hunting?

Enjoyed your story good to hear you got some porkers.
Sometimes life can be a PITA but that is part of the fun of hunting when everything goes smooth a person tends to not appreciate the tough times.

The chow was pretty good, local pork ... :) they make all the sausage and assorted smoked portions.

This is the mid year escape, I can only take work about 14-16 weeks at a time . There's 6-8 of us that have gone on this trip for 4 yrs .

Popper
It is a pay ranch . Hogs ,deer and exotics, red stag, black buck ,watusi ,fallow deer . Not my favorite way to hunt ,but well managed and played on just over 500 acres . I've seen a few farm born pigs there in the past but not this yr ,at least not marked . There were lots of Russian/razor backs this year.

If you do this again go up to Luling and eat at the City Market. We would drive from San Antonio to there after Lockhart's BBQ made the History Channel long ago, but couldn't keep up with production and quality.

Where we are they've opened a store like back home and do well, and we are happy.

Enjoyed the read, reminded me of a few trips my close HS friend and I used to go on. Course for us the best part was usually making it home without any trips to the ER. LOL

Thanks again

The saga continues.
We left Mena Ar about 0600 Friday morning. All went well as far as Wilberton Ok and a stop for Ms to see her Aunt . We encountered heating problems when we hit I40 at OKC . We gimped down to Clinton and thought we had it fixed . By 0600 this morning we were on our way and making fair time ...... shortly after 2nd fuel the heating was back .......
Tucumcari NM would be a fun place to root around in if we didn't have places to be . The NAPA was great there and they had a brand new radiator on the shelf for the new to me 85' F250 diesel. What are the odds really ? Gallup is .......um.. ...well we have beds , if the shower isn't hot I may have blood in my eye.

Coming from 6000 ft elevation I once ran the water in Gallup for 7 minutes before I figured it never would get cold. I have enjoyed the saga.

Speaking of 6000 ft . I just let my boss know I wouldn't be in tomorrow. I 40 is a parking lot at Flagstaff. Lost an injector on the new to me F250 @ Holbrook Az so we unloaded the Explorer, @270 k, off that goose neck loaded up the F250 and hooked that to my folks truck ,Mom's coming out for a load of their stuff , and put her flabed on the Explorer.

Does your "new to me 85 F250" have the 6.9, is it stock or has a turbo been added? The old IDIs are rugged engines, IMHO.

It should be mandatory that anyone entering Texas from another state must stop and shoot a pig at some point. Nice kills and thanks for helping with the problem!

I'd be game for hog slaying by mandate ! I don't know where I'd put them but I bet I could come up with a cooking list like ol' Bubba had for shrimp.

Screw bolts I PM'd.

Got the PM and answered it. Grey paint on injectors and caps will indicate if they are original.

Agreed! Wouldn't need a mandate if more folks knew how tasty they are. I don't think there's better freezer meat than a small pig up to about 125 or 150 lbs.

I agree. Mostly sausage (or sausage fat) but smoked loins, grilled tenderloins, smoked hams, smoked & pulled pork shoulders or even roasted whole for the smaller ones.

Started butchering and packaging up pork. I vacuum sealed the two hind quarters from the 65 pound little boar and would like to bbq them up for the bbq dinner planned for NCBS in Winnemucca June 4. Not sure what the best method might be. The cooker is quite large, covered and heats with charcoal.

Do I wrap them in foil? Put them in my biggest dutch oven or put them right on the grill with indirect heat? Or maybe there is another way that will work better that I haven't thought of. Please feel free to respond with any recipes for the meat and sauces. Carolina, Kansas City or TexMex matters not to me as long as I end up with something to put on a roll and eat. The boolit went through up front so there is no blood shot meat, no gamey smell and it looks quite tasty. Help me make a treat.

I was cleaning up the backstrap/loin when I noticed a small bit of bloodshot meat. Can only mean one thing, so I prodded around with my finger tip and sure enough there is was. 250 gr original weight, 192 gr residual. Never underestimate the power of a slow moving heavy boolit.

Bruce, congrats on the hog kills. In my opinion, do not wrap with foil. If it was me cooking those hams, I would find a dry rub that I liked, rub 'em down good, and then maybe a little more. Whether you do the D.O. or indirect on the grill makes some difference. The grill being smokier, but either method will be very good. I would suggest going "low and slow" with the heat to keep things nice, tender, and even. You will want to pay attention to temp. though. You will want at least 155F in the center because of the stuff hogs can carry. Use a good thermometer and cook away. Now that I am writing this out, I would probably go with the indirect grill method just because it is easier for the low, slow method, and a nice smokey touch will hurt nothing. Enjoy, I will miss you guys this time. JW

TXGunNut,

Good chorizo is hard to find anywhere. I think that chorizo is spanish for any old **** will do. But when you find good chorizo it is truly a treat. There is a deli in Carson City Nv owned by a Basque family from Battle Mt. that makes chorizo to die for. "Villa Basque" is the name of the deli. http://villabasquecafe.com/

Mostly I make chorizo with elk meat and pork fat. But having actual pork to add as well is a plus. Maybe one of the big shoulder roasts that Walmart has sometimes. I go maybe 40% fat 60% lean. for about 13 lbs of grind I sprinkle 2 tablespoons cider vinegar. 1/4 cup Morton's Tender Quick meat cure (instead of salt), 1/2 cup chili powder (this I make myself by grinding dried chili that you find in cello bags in the mexican section at the grocery store, buy the hot ones if you want it hot or mild etc. I use New Mexico or California and Poblano.) 1/2 cup paprika mostly for color. Garlic and onion powder to taste, but I am pretty generous with it, I tbsp black pepper. Sometimes I put it in casings and sometimes I just vacuum seal bulk. Not sure how authentic of a chorizo recipe this is but it works for me and I get lots of complements.

Jon,

I was thinking more like a aluminum foil boat to put them in, open on top. Also NVWalt suggested that I might want to brine them overnite in a salt solution for flavor. The wild pork is kind of bland. I think I will use a indirect method with a good rub after brining. I will miss you and Lagene this year and know that others will as well. Maybe some rat strafing in the spring again?

hey screwbolts, what is the best diesel engine in ford trucks from 1995-2005? turbo or non turbo.just wondering, will be in the market for a new vehicle in about 6mo. probably will get a 1998-2000 jeep wrangler, but a 4x4 f-250 or f-350 would be cool to, if it was diesel

My apologies to the OP for the above question and when I hijacked the thread asking about your truck.

KIDD: In 94.5 the 7.3 IDI was replaced with the 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. Being the PS was only available and designed to be turbo charged, the answer is very easy, I would go with a turbo charged Powerstroke, 97 or older! older! They are very good motors. I would also stay with the older body style, pre 98 trucks, so the motor is not covered by the long windshield firewall changes. ( just a personal thing as I do my own work, ) A properly tuned non turbo 7.3 IDI is no slouch. My 93 Non turbo has 385K and the last 210K on used veg oil. My 93s F250s body has been consumed by NYS salt. :-(

Harter66's 85 should have the 6.9 IDI that IMHO is a very capable simple engine, IH put 9 years in R&D in developing the 6.9, the father of the 7.3 IDI

Harter66, sorry for this Hijack.

None needed .
Mine has a few "extended vacation" bugs to get sorted out . There are a few out there like mine . XLT Lariat ,cruise ,tilt ,A/C ,power ,gooseneck and tow package ,6.9 IDI . 3.54 rear end ,4 speed ,30 yo and high miles according to the previous owner ,having its factory injectors I'll venture that the 87k showing is the 1st 87k the upolstry suggests the same .

Thanks for the recipe, Ammohead. I have learned that our neighbors to the south seldom share the best chorizo, tequila or beer with us. Good chorizo is a wonderful thing, indeed. I could tell you about a Sauza tequila my dad brought home many years ago but I'd be preaching to the choir, I suspect.

TX,

I am not sure that our neighbors to the south are the best source for chorizo. Find some Basque and you will find quality chorizo. Not sure how many are in Texas but New Mexico has some for sure. Find a area with a history of sheepmen and you will find Basque families. We have a treasure trove of them in Nevada. No finer eats than when you sit down at a Basque restaurant for dinner. Seating similar to a "Rudy's BBQ" but with adorable dark eyed waitresses that just keep bringing more food. I dare you to eat it all.
