9mm to 40S&W barrel swap

Is it possible to swap out a 9mm Beretta 92 barrel or a 9mm S&W 5906 to a 40 S&W with just a barrel swap. I understand the mags are the same.

My guess is no. Since the case diameters are different the breech face width and extractor position would be different.

I don't know about those specific pistols, but in the ones I have experience with, you can put a 9mm barrel in a .40, but not the other way around.
