For an AR stuff it on there tighten ring and go for it. I haven't used one in years for an AR.

Rent them, cheaper than buying for a one time use.

If the barrel extension is already installed you don't need a headspace gauge. Unless you are doing the threading and chambering the barrel should come with an extension that has already been set for headspace.

I used masking tape on case heads. 3 layers should not chamber. 2 layers should have a little resistance.

This is actually a good common sense and cheap alternative to buying or renting a set of gauges. I've used this method four times already and it most definitely worked. I first learned about it on the Savage Barrel-Nut forums.

If you plan on using a specific brand or head stamp of brass, this method works particularly will. There's a well respected nationally known gunsmith named Gordy Gritters that uses this method. He has a video on youtube showing how it's done.

few types of brass, mostly fc brass for plinking cut and neck for 300blk, and per necked lc brass for hunting loads.

I have checked a couple hundred AR bolts. I have yet to find more than a .001" variation.

went on and ordered a go gage, looked up some stuff about using them on youtube. had a video where a gunsmith (can't remember his name) added a piece of scotch tape to the back of the go gage and subbed it in for a no gage.

may not be a one time use. have a friend who is thinking of building a 300bo.
well try some of the other methods that was post in these thread as well. thank you for the replies.

with what happen to me recently, I want to be over cautions then not be. if that makes any since.

I am rebuilding for an bad mistake and want to make sure everything is right. I have reorganized my reloading room. finding ways to keep from getting distracted and knowing what is in what.
