Marlin 336 magazine spring too tight

It takes all I can do to put 5 rounds in a 336 magazine of my brothers. I believe the spring is too long. Any one know how long the spring should be or what method i could use to determine how much I can safely cut off and still have good function?

IME, I've found that a tube magazine spring's free length usually ends up being about 150% (+/-) of the length of the tube itself - IOW, a 20" long magazine tube's spring's free length should measure 30", etc, etc.

Hey there John -- Some 336's came with a plug in the magazine. You might consider pulling the tube plug, and pulling the magazine tube off the stud and see if anything falls out. Hope this helps. Best regards. Wind
