I have a repro 1858 Remington .44. It shoots very far right and I knocked the sight out trying to "tweak". I figured the easiest way to do it would be just to dovetail a new front sight in, I seen where several people have done this successfully so I figured that would be the best plan of attack. My question is , if anyone on here has done this what sight did you find worked the best? I looked on TOTW but wasn't sure which one would be the best option? Any thoughts?

I have dovetailed several ML sights, so I know the procedure for that.

I take it you have a Pietta. Uberti Remingtons come with a dovetailed front sight, and so the obvious choice, if you need to buy the sight ready-made, is to order the uberti front sight. Taylor's and several others sell the parts.

Or, since you've cut dovetails before and you thus already have at least 95% of the experience needed, make your own, similar to this one;

Start high, and file the sight down to elevation zero. It helps to bring a file to the shooting range. The Uberti Remington front sights tend to come high for that reason.

Track has a site that I've purchased in steel and brass but have yet to use them. I also bought from VTI Pietta Tiro front sights that were made for the guns and because of a protracted illness have yet to install them either. I'm going to put them on 3 Pietta 1858s and one Pietta Spiller & Burr eventually.

Mine is a stainless framed Dixie, not sure who they had make it for them. I stumbled upon the uberti sights at VTI shortly after the OP and decided to just try one of those. Hopefully it is tall enough. The original sight was very tall and elevation was perfect with no filing needed but it did shoot about 6" right at 15 yards.

Took me a minute to get it dialed in but that is MUCH better.
This "group" was 7 shots

Was fine tuning the windage, still a decent group.

I'm happy! Now need to run some more ball.
