A friend has a new 45/70 marlin cowboy and he has cast some 405 grain boolits for it.
He is worried about the "length" warning on the gun
Evidently a warning about the overall cartridge lenght.

Is it because of the tube feed or something else?

Any help would be gratly appreciated.

TIA

Cntrmass, I also have a new 1895CB.
My understanding on the col is so the elevator can pick up the cartridge without it being too long and jamming the action.
I am loading Lee 405gr hollow base bullets and DO need to seat them deeper than I did for my IAB Sharps.
I haven't had a chance to shoot any yet, but I did make up a couple of "dummy" shells to check out functioning. They worked great.

The 405 works good in my GG but I did up a couple dummy rounds to get the length that would work in it good , I also did a couple for a 455 gn boolit but with that I have to watch what I load it with and how much .

2.550 is what seems to work really well in my buddies GG and my Cowboy. I've never had any trouble with any commerical cast bullets or with the one's I've started casting as the crimp groove seems to be in just the right place. FWIW.

I found an article on the web when we started loading 45-70 2 years ago by Taffin and it had a ton of good info for the Marlin's . . . . .I'll see if I can find the printed copy and get you a URL later today when I'm down at the bench working.

Have a good one,
Dave
