Cleaning out my dads shop and found another odd bit- Ideal mold 42498 210 drops a .426 bullet that weighs in at 205gr.
Too small for most of the .44's that I have listed in the manuals that I have- but, of course, they are newer.
What would this have cast for?

Unless I'm reading my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook wrong - it would be too small for a 44/40.

That's what I got too, just on the small size for 44-40...
I was wondering about some of the old 44's - not that there are many older than 44-40...
Looked too at the 38-40, oversized for that.
interesting.

Ideal 1897 catalog lists the 42498 as “This is the regular .44-40 bullet for Winchester, Marlin and Colt’s rifles and pistols.”
Price was $1.10.
Mold sizes used to be set to match the groove diameter of a particular caliber. Oversized boolits and even sizing was frowned upon up into the 50's and 60's.
The modern method of +.001 or +.002 over bore came way after this mold was made.

It's the same as Lyman 427098 which is the newer number for that mold. It's the old style.44-40 205 gr bullet.
