Now that is a cool revolver, about as cool as it gets.

Thanks, took me several months to find a 6 inch blued gun with the short underlug. Actually got it on our swappin and sellin forum. I have always liked the "sleeper" look :)

The non-fingergroove wood ones are VERY comfy.

I made a set of elk antler inserts for the factory grips on my GP-100. Polished up they looked and more importantly, felt, surprisingly good.

I do like the short underlug look.

A revolver as nice as that deserves ivory grips!

I cut down 41mag brass to "spl" when the top edge becomes a little crimp worn. 41spl loads are very nice low recoil loads for my Blackhawk. And yes, that's a very good looking revolver you have there. Gp

Well, shot it a little this morning(target was recycled from some 30cal). Shot 3 at 33 yards resting my forearms on the truck bed: 2 1/8 inches very high. Moved the sights down, shot 2 more : touching so moved the sights down the same amount more. Shot the last one in the cyl, close enough for some plinking. I did move the sights a clik to the right but haven't shot any more on paper. I was shooting some loads that took a trip thru the washing machine, don't ask...........
Now to load some fresh loads , this was 13.5 of 2400 with the NOE HP ,230gr from memory. Load sheet says it should be 1150ish.
the gun is lighter than my 4 inch stainless 357 GP and the balance is the same. I was hitting cans consistently at 25 and fifty yards offhand,Recoil is mild, like you would expect with stiff 44Specials in a short Redhawk. I LIKE IT ,,, Lots :)

I have a wood Hogue for the Kframes, may get one and remove the "ridges" , I like the idea of antler inserts in the original GP100 grips. I hit a big shedd with the bushhog the day before yesterday,, may get to work on that. I think I like the idea of keeping everything in the mat blue realm with the antler as accents, but then I have no sense of style, just ask my wife :)

Heres what the NOE HPs look like after a trip thru 6 inches of red oak log. It was hollow and they penetrated one side and stuck on the other side of the hollow center. 3 are recovered from a clay bank behind the first paper target. They were hunting loads from last year from my TI tracker. Not sure of the alloy, but soft, and no leading after 50 of them.

Excellent. I like that you went blued and half lug. Classy gun and that frame size is perfect for that cartridge.

Why 41 Special? Is the frame not strong enough for Mag? Or is it a cylinder length issue? Nice pistol!!

The GP100 can be converted to a five-shot 41 Rem Mag. It requires enlarging the frame window.

Look up the ruger match champion. The grips they come with are available from hogue in many different wood patterns. And a few different grip styles.

yup I know Dave used to do gp100s in 41 mag. I think he did them in 5 shot though and the specials in 6 shot but don't hold me to that.

Clements does six-shot 41 Special and 10 mm conversions.
Gary Reeder does five-shot 41 Rem Mag conversions. See:

I'd love to have that article the gun is setting on in the first post to read!

I would too :),, That is the page of data that Mr Clements sent with my revolver. As to why the special, well it is capable of everything I need a revolver to do. I have a 44Mag Redhawk if I need to push it that far, but 230gr boolits at 1000fps are right where I want to be and the 41 Special can exceed that. I get a less expensive conversion with the 6 shot cyl vs the 5 shot to boot. Besides, I wouldn't need the 41Mag 3 screw if I had gone Mag in the GP100

Thanks for the nice comments, and I will look to the match champion grips, they feel good. I just gotta find some time away from work to cast some more 41s so I can shoot it some more..

The article in the first post is by John Taffin and is available online. I don't have enough computer savvy to post a link, but if you google 'taffin tests .41 special', you'll get there.

here is the link to the only Taffin article I can find online: http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt41spec.htm

It seems different than the partial article. The page of data is from American Handgunner March/April 1992, if anyone has a "library" laying arround, you know :)

Found the details, below copied from magazine's archive page, Comparing to the omline Taffin link above, the content is consistent, and the data. Just formatted differently. No need to order!

I kept mine down to 6 grains of unique or 11 grains of 2400 but then mine was built on a single six not a gp100

We need a Smith "Model 67". A 69 but in 41 mag......or someone to do a special run of GP-100 41 mag ala the new 44 special.

+Nice a .41spl in a .41frame. I think it is perfect, but I'm very biased.........

My old Colt I-frame .357 Magnum ("pre-Trooper" to some) in its ".41" frame gets nervous every time it catches me eyeing it up with .41 Special thoughts.

Life's been really in the way these last few years. Been plinking with it and taken it hunting several times but no accuracy or load testing beyond verifying it was zeroed with the load for the Taurus TI. Sad to say I have yet to cast a WC in my nearly year old mold. I'll update this next time I get it out for a walk, ground hogs are stirring:)

Another route offering similar ballistic performance but staying true to rimmed/revolver stuff is the 41 Special. This cartridge apparently works quite well in the GP. Down side here is no option for speed loaders. I would be stuck with speed strips or belt loops, etc. Is that a big deal?

It's not to me, I kinda consider it a single shot that stores 5 more on board. It's a woods gun for me, just for ground hogs, deer and the occasional rabid pine cone. I CCW a M36 without reloads, yeah not fitting the consenus, but at least I got a gun! If I wanted to shoot competition then a speed loader might be an issue and I probably would have gone 10mm. I just like the lower pressure heavier bullet and rimmed case of the 41special. Does what I need without clips to fool with. Kinda depends on your desires.

But I always seem to end up accumulating various odds and ends whenever I pick up a new pistol. Holsters, mags, a few spares parts or some other nonsense.

Anyway, what do you have for a pet load? Anything you care to share?
