View Full Version : Anyone See "The Hateful 8"?

There was a scene where the character played by Kurt Russel took away the pistols of two of the guys in Minnie's Haberdashery. He disassembled them into a bucket. Pushed out what looked like a wedge and then the barrel came off, the cylinder came out and the pivot rod for the cylinder unscrewed.

Anyone know what kind of pistol these were? Seems like they were 'modular' and could have been any of several caliber, etc. Seems like a pistol ahead of it's time for the movie.

Thanks,

Jim

I haven't seen the movie BUT for COLT style cap and ball black powder revolvers...or cartridge conversions of same...you pull the wedge, slide barrel off the pin (called an arbor) and then remove the cylinder.
Take a look at CIMMARON ARMS or TAYLORS for cartridge conversions and OPEN TOPS. Tom Selleck used OPEN TOPS or cartridge conversions in some of his TV westerns...CROSSFIRE TRAIL, LAST STAND AT SABER RIVER; cap and ball in QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER...second fiddle to his SHARPS...in the gun fight scene at the end.

colt 1860 revolvers were in common use until the beginning of the last century. there were just so damned many of them, and they were just so effective and cheap to load...

It was an interesting movie to say the least, but holds true to the directors normal direction

That was nearly three hours and $17.00 my wife and I would like to have back. Was interesting until Samuel Jackson started telling about what he did to the Rebel General's son and then went to pot. Tarantino claims he is a big supporter of black rights but lives in a gated community. Guess he was pandering to them.

It will be a cold day in Hades before Tarantino gets a penny of my money. I don't care how good the actors are, or authentic the firearms are. He's on my "no fly list" forever.

Interesting also that Clint Eastwood in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" carried two extra loaded cylinders in a pouch on his belt, old west speed loaders for a cap & ball revolver?

I have read this was very common during the Civil War particularly with the Calvary.

I read a claims that it was fairly common to have 4 pistols with spare cylinders on your person and at least 2 more on the horse.

Several of us at work really like Kurt Russell.....but none of us have any use for Tarantino. We all chipped in and bought the movie......I still really like Kurt........but the bulk of this movie pretty much confirms that I still wouldn't pee on Tarantino if he was on fire........I want my $3 back.

Went to the movie with my wife. the movie was a little long but typical for Tarantino, I liked the movie.
The fire arms were correct for the time period and the acting was OK.

looks as if many cap and ball revolvers had this feature. http://www.civilwarhandgun.com/obscure.htm#griswald

I watched the movie, and while the credits were rolling at the end, the name "Thell Reed" jumped out. He was one of the original Combat Pistol guys, along with Jeff Cooper, and has spent a career teaching fast draw to actors.

With due respect to M-Tecs and justashooter - here's a guy that REALLY knows his way around a revolver.

Gentlemen, thank you kindly for the answers. Looks like it was the Remington New Army. I do remember Jose Wales (Clint Eastwood) using additional cylinders, but his barrel didn't need to come off to remove the cylinder so I was thinking it was a different gun. I believe he (Clint) also used those guns in Pale Rider if not many more of his westerns. I seem to remember the same cylinder change out at the shoot-out at the end of Pale Rider. Love that movie, just thinking of any character played by Clint Eastwood is a preacher - Like Kurt Russell playing a gay guy...

Thanks to 'bdicki' for the WIKI link.

Regardless of what I think of traitortino, I like his movies and he seems to use the same group of actors in many of them. His politics aside, he makes entertaining movies, but I'm with you Don and the story about the generals son. That was way over the top. Could have been done different. Fortunately, I only spent a few dollars and watched off of pay-per-view.

[FWIW, I'd help put out his fire - with a gallon of gas...]

EDIT:

Looks like Jose Wales used Colt Walkers and I was correct about the Preacher in Pale Rider. This is the movie he reloaded the pistols by changing the cylinders.

Tuco (Eli Wallach) was as anti gun as they come. He was on the board of HCI (Brady). He played the part of a worm and is now worm food.

Yup, one of the best one man gunfight scenes ever.

I like Kurt Russel movies most of the time but I rented this movie on Direct TV for six dollars and I wasted my money I was not impressed at all I would have been better off buying a gallon of ice cream and taking a nap.

Pale Rider was the Remington, they had the top strap above the cylinder so the barrel was not removed to remove the cylinder. Slide a rod that cylinder revolves on forward and the cylinder could be pulled out the side. Colt the whole barrel had to come off to swap the cylinder, which pulled off the front.

Cabela's had the Remington New Army on sale recently with a spare cylinder for $249, not bad since the spare cylinders tend to run $60. I think the top strap of the Remington makes for a stronger and more rigid revolver, some say that the colt just dropping the cylinder on is easier or faster. I think it takes practice to slide the cylinder into the Remington quickly and smoothly. I tend to have to fiddle a bit to get mine in and out.

Did you count how many times they dropped the N word that we all can't say? I estimated 100 times thruout the movie. It was typical Quentin with massive amounts of longwinded dialog laced with excruciating detail.

I did love how Jennifer Lee got slopped with virtually every disgusting spuge in the entire movie.

I could only stand about ten minutes, if that passes for entertainment, I'm glad I quit watching T.V.

Actually it was a Colt in the Hateful 8. Josey Wales also Colts. Remington in Pale rider. That's the only one that you can change cylinders without separating the barrel and frame. I have all but the pocket Colt.

Edit:
BTW I hated the hateful eight. Appropriate title for a movie that makes you hate every single character as well as yourself for wasting money to see it.
