I'm going to buy a Lee mold to Cast Boolits for my friends. 458 socom. I guess it's on an ad platform. He wants heavy Boolits. What is the best Lee mold for.. 458 socom I have no idea. As far as I know you use 45/70 molds. He wants it to be a heavy hitting brush gun. What would be best. Thanks guys

I use the Lee 500gr in my 45-70. No idea if it would be to long to cycle in a socom.

It depends on what he wants for heavy hitting. I cast and shoot the Lee 500 gr. RNL with a gascheck out of my SOCOM but you can't really push that too fast but it does put a lot of lead on target and hit hard. A better choice would be a 350-400 grain bullet to be able to push it faster, I use the NOE 350 gr. RD bullet also in the SOCOM for a faster load. One issue with the Lee moulds is they all have a somewhat round nose profile and that doesn't make for hard hitting projectiles compared to something with a large flat metplat.

In the pic below you can see the Lee 500 gr bullet coated with Hi Tek and loaded in a .458 SOCOM. The bullet on the end loaded in the 45-70 is the 350 RD I also load in the SOCOM and you can see the nose profile with the larger metplat.

The results guys have been getting in the .458socom with the 500gr Lee (3R) is not that great. Only one of the Lee molds are gas checked bullets, the .458 seems to like gas checked bullets better. I have NOE and Accurate molds from 350gr-405gr for my .458socom. I have a 1-18 twit so I'm not setup for heavy 500gr bullets or subsonic.

Is gas checks a requirement for hunting load with 400-450 grain bullets in the .458 SOCOM?

So far I have gotten 98/2 alloy to 1583FPS with no gas check on a 458 Socom very accurately

Smoke4320: That sounds promising. What barrel length and bullet weight? I'll be using water quenched WW, so probably a bit harder than your 98/2.

It's a Rock River Arms 16" AR
Bullet is a NOE 460-325 IIRC will check this afternoon

Neat looking picture almost looks like a rendering.

It does look strange doesn't it. I am not sure why it looks that way, I think I didn't get enough light on them.

It probably isn't the hammer he is looking for but I had ok luck with the lee 405 hollow base 50/50 pure lead to wheel weights in my 1-14 twist 458 socom bolt action. Probably 3/4 - 1 inch group at 50yds, and was able to hit 2'x3' steel at 200yds.
