View Full Version : What would be a good bullet for a 1 in 48 twist 50 caliber?

The rifle I posted earlier about has a 50 caliber 1 in 48 twist stainless barrel with a false muzzle which tells me it is made for a bullet and not just a patched round ball. I did shoot some .490 commercial round balls with pillow ticking and the grouping was really good. So I want to try some bullets and the only experience I have are with some Lee molded 58 caliber REAL bullets which work pretty darn well in my H&A 58 caliber under hammer.

Any ideas would be very helpful and if they are commercially available I'll buy a few to test them instead of the trouble of molding them. Thanks.

well lubed Lee REAL's & T/C maxi-balls have always worked good in my 1 in 48 twist T/C's.

Hornady 385 gr hollow base shot very well over 80 gr Goex 2F in my dad's renegade.

IMO false muzzles were/are done for shooting PRB w thick patches not boolits. I have 2 PRB guns w false muzzles and had another. Most PRB heavy bench guns have false muzzles. One I know is a .52 shooting .530 balls and .020" Teflon patching. Now that's tight.

A 48 twist doesn't necissarily mean it will shoot conicals. What is the depth of the rifling grooves? If about .004" (IE if land to land is .500 and groove to groove is .508) it will do well w conicals. If grooves are .010" or more it probably won't shoot the conicals well.

oldracer. a bullet no longer than .8 long. size to .493 or .492 and single wrap it with a 60 thousands wad behind the bullet. should shoot to 300 yards at least very accurate.i know you know how to paperpatch the bullet as you do several others now. also as you do with others roll the bullet between two clean files to puff up a little so when wrapped it bites into the lands some and still goes down easy. their must be a mold that fits that bill that can be resized. guys that make resizers are getting hard to find, lately i had to take a resizer that i dont use and had a machinest bore it to .493. if their is a will their is a way.
