I have been trying to make 300blk out cases from .223/5.56 Federal and mixed comercial brass. I have to turn the die down about 4 turns pass contacting the shell holder to get the correct sholder set back. Is this normal for Hornady dies? I have a RCBS Summit press.

There is already a thread going about using Hornady dies to form 300 blackout cases and it was started by rich22

Not quite the same problem I am having though.

In the past I've had various dies give me fits, and for me there's only 1 of 2 ways to fix the problem. Either by removing some material from the shell holder itself or by removing material from the base of the sizing die. Most of the time I remove material from the sizer die, generally .010 which seems about right. You can remove the material from the shell holder but I've actually broke the shell holder since I made it weaker.

On a RCBS set I've had to remove .030 from the base of the die to make it work. But most of the time it's been right around .010 and I don't care whos dies they are.

I am using Hornady dies for 300 BO
Using a RCBS rock chucker
Handle down - install dies till touch-- up handle plus 1/8 to 1/4 turn on dies - Lock it down
remove deprimer rod
using clean cases
Lube cases ( I an using the baggie method and rcbs lube)

first couple I use mark 1 eyeball to make sure die touches shell holder when sizing a case
do batch I am working on
Aneal
Cut using a Band saw and a jig trim to length plus a tiny bit
Trim to length
short Clean (crushed walnut and auto polish)
lube and deprime (this will double check shoulder position and do a final neck size)
Primer pocket swage(dillon)
short Clean (crushed walnut and auto polish)

and Load it

Not sizing any brass with a 223 neck bigger than 0.012 ---- preferance is 0.010 - 0.011

I use only lake city brass, it all measures 0.0115. I am using Lee Dies. De prime with universal De primer. Swage primer pockets with dillion, Cut to within 1 thou, pin wash, lube, form, anneal, pin wash again, tumble in walnut, size with giraud cutter, (this machine sizes the brass, deburs and chamfers all in one operation) load. I am shooting swaged 150 grain boolits (made with BT Snipers Dies) with 15 grains of Lil Gun. Have not had any problems and very happy with brass and boolits. I have made over 3000 pieces of blackout brass this way and although it is a little time consuming, the satisfaction is there.

I use the Hornady dies and had a heck of a time getting the shoulder in the right place. I was using a Hornady shell holder that I bought at the same time as the dies. Finally I changed to a Lee shell holder and all was good. It seems the shell holder dimension from the datum where the brass sits to the top was longer on the Hornady holder than the Lee by about .012.

some of the older Hornady dies were having issues with where they were setting the shoulder.
when I had mine on order I found out about the problem and bought an rcbs die set at the same time and have been using it to full length size everything.

I have 2 sets of older Hornady Pacific dies that push the shoulder too far back. They are 7.65 Mauser and 8X57 Mauser. I quit using their stuff because of these goofy dies.

Case forming did not work correctly on the Dillon as the shell plate was too thick. Switched to the Rockchucker with no issues.

I had to back my Lee die out a touch because it was setting the shoulder back too far for me. Doesn't matter who the die maker is, eventually you will have a die that will need adjusting.

Talked to Hornady since I could not get the die to work on the AP, says that is a common problem. They offered to shave 5 thou off the mouth of the die if I sent it to them. Seems to work well on the Single stage but on the AP I cannot get the shoulder right at any setting.

I haven't had any problems using my Hornady FL die to make 300 blackout cases. The only thing I've had to watch for is ending up with case necks that are too thick to chamber. I don't use mixed brass anymore because of this. I only use LC cases. I guess I could turn the necks on the ones that won't pass a case gauge, but that is time consuming.

I'm using the Lee dies to form 300BO from random .223 and 5.56 brass and not having any issues.

same here.
Lee dies and a Rock chucker Jr setup just for the 300.
I trim the brass to 300 BO before forming the case with one of those cheap harbour freight mini saws and the jig that holds the case.
tumble, and deprime the case while forming the case.
Then finally run it through the foster case trimmer setup with a hand drill and a OAL stop.

Maybe do a few other things or in a different order but that's about the short and long of it.

Made just over 500 in the last 4 years.
No problems yet.

I'm using Hornady dies with RCBS shell holder on an Rockchucker. Trim to length and 4 gradual pass with no issues. The brass I'm using are just bunch of old LC.

I do the same. Cut with harbor freight saw then trim and resize with Lee die. No problems at all. They work better than factory Remington that I used recently!
