anyone chime in, I am interested in opinions on the best boolits/and their molds. mention whatever you like, but I have a levergun so for my informational experiment here, boolits that will work/cycle in leverguns, and tube mags, are what I am interested in. thankyou very much!

If you favor flat points, LBT wrote the book on them, in either PB or GC, from 350 grs. up to 550 grs., those designs are the ones used by Buff. Bore, Garret, etc....Accurate, and NOE have many nice FPs in their lineup. Some Lyman and RCBS molds in the 400 grain range are classics, as is Lyman's 330 gr. Gould Hollow point the worlds best deer boolit.

gould , are they a company or is it a style of express bullits using HP's to lighten them?

I have already tried the lee 457-405-rnfp and the .459-405hb, I like the lube grooves in the .459hb but the spud got bent out of wack, irreparable. I wish they made that pattern, the .459-405hb, as a regular solid in a two cavity like the 457-405, I don't see why it would be hard, the already have the tools to cut it, and there's one less step now, not having to make it hollow base. they might need to make it .457-.458 since there wouldn't be as much "give" as far as compression.

I have no info or experience with lee molds and wouldn't use them, but the "Gould" mold is Lyman's 459122, named for AC Gould,a turn of the century outdoors writer and experimenter. There are alot of copies of that hollowpoint design but most have too big an opening for me.

RCBS 300 grain flat point. I have had two of these molds and find them to be accurate in both rifles and 45 Colt revolvers.

How about a mould MADE for the 1895 Marlin

lead fred, does that boolit work ok with pan lubing? it look as though it was made for LL. ALSO, does anyone have a few lee .459-500rn boolits laying around that they could spare, I would like to try before I spend all my money on a mold. because I literally only have enough for one lee mold, the .457-405rnfp looks ok but I have a single cavity used one and the lube grooves are verrry shallow, don't know if its from wear or made that way, and I have the .459-405hb, but I dropped it and the spud bent and it will not seal, ive tried everything, its dead, but I loved the lube grooves iin it. so before that happened my vote would have been the lee hollow base.

what diameter are the 45 colts? did you have to size down in 2 or 3 stages?

My favorite is the Accurate 46-430vg.
It's a copy of the Beartooth piledriver jr. Huge meplat, designed to be as wide as possible yet still reliably feed in a lever action.

The mold I ordered was a combo with the 350vg and 525vg, but the 430 is the best overall IMO.

The only two mold I have left for the .45-70 are the Lyman 457122HP (Gould already mentioned) and the RCBS 45-405-FN. Both shoot great in both my Marlin 1895 and my H&R Handi-rifle.

My favorite is the Lyman 457191. Next is the Lee or Lyman 405 gr.
