View Full Version : Do I need to remove gas checks?

While digging through some reloading stuff my Dad didn't need, I came across a box of bullets (boolits? - what's the difference anyway?) I can use for my .45-70. They are .459" and weigh 460 gr with four lube grooves and a gas check. I'm loading for a Sharps 1-18" twist. I'm game to go either smokeless or BP. So, should I keep or remove the gas checks, and if I should remove them, how do I do that without damaging the bullet?

I see no reason to remove them. Just think of them as something extra like a cherry on a sunday. You may not "need" it but it surly does not hurt to have it. :)

I agree with Motor, shoot'em.

Like any other loads, shoot 'em and document the results, they may end up being the best boolits that gun has ever seen, but it could take years of testing to realize that.

Thanks y'all. I'm pretty new to this stuff and haven't used gas checked bullets before. Wasn't sure if they are one of those things that works great in some situations but are a detriment in others. I'll see what they do!

Welcome to the site. The stickies are very helpful here. Not trying to discourage questions of any type but they ARE very helpful. Unless any of the checks are very loose no need to remove them, shoot away.

+1. Unless they are loose, gas checks are not a detriment.
