Hey Everyone, I picked up my model 94 the other day and got to shoot a few rounds through it. I enjoy the gun but had a question or two about a stamp (punch mark?) on the mag tube.

When I purchased the rifle It had a ring attached to it, I believe it used to be sling swivel band, but it looks like it was broken off at one time, the rifle shows no signs of being dropped or hit against something so I am unsure how that happened, but I noticed a circular ring on the mag tube that almost looks like the back end of a sling stud? Is this mark something on magazine tubes or was it deliberately punched? Just trying to get more info on it.

Mag tube with the ring I took off it.

First, I think you're correct, that the broken ring was an Uncle Mike's or similar ring for a detachable sling swivel. Easy enough to replace yourself if you want a sling. Secondly, the "punch mark" probably doesn't mean a thing, other than what you surmised that it could also be the result of a sling swivel installation. It certainly doesn't appear big enough or deep enough to interfere with the movement of the tube's internals, so it's not to worry. Nice looking rifle. Sure a beautiful place you have to shoot.

Beautiful rifle-- 1956 manufacture, I believe. I've looked at both my Model 1984's (one from 1949 and the other from 1968) and see no similar marks. don't think its any kind of standard mark.

.

The gun looks to be in very nice condition.

While I've seen many pistol-grip pre-64 Winchester Model 94's with checkered wood, that's the 1st time I've ever seen (in over 40 years) a checkered pre-64 Model 94 Carbine.

The checkering does look like the factory checkering on post-64 Model 94-XTR's, though - and IMO enhances the look , if not the value, of your Carbine.

The magazine mount Uncle Mike's sling rings are AFAIK split rings - but the one-piece magazine sling bands were a popular aftermarket accessory in the 1960's & 70's.

Was the buttstock wood drilled for a rear sling loop ?

If believing in: Out of site out of of mind. With a little touch up of instant bluing should resolve that minor issue to a otherwise really nice rifles appearance. Congrats on you're 57 build Winchester purchase.

Yah it has a rear sling stud in the stock. I am unsure whether the checkering was done by the factory through custom order or if it was done by hand later along with the inlays

Nice rifle, if you want to use a sling I'd cover the mark with a new clamp from Uncle Mike's. In any case I'd dab a little cold blue on it. Pretty sure that checkering was done after it left the factory but it appears to be very well done.
