I found myself wondering the other day what coating they put on commercial lead bullets. For instance hornady sells some lead bullets that don't feel like they have any coating on them at all but they claim they do. I've bought some swaged wad cutters that fell the same and don't look like they have any coating on them but they never lead my barrel. Does anybody know what this coating is they use? I'm sure I wouldn't be able to reproduce this coating but I'm still curious.

Hornadys coating on their swaged bullets is a alox type of lube. It's put on wet and dsys to a slightly waxy feeling coating. Others may chime in soon if I'm way off.

Mica is used for dry lubing swaged bullets.

So why don't we use mica for cast bullets? I'm assuming because of The way it's applied.

We do ,I've used motor mica on my alox coated bullets for 20 + years . It keeps them from being sticky to the touch .

I tumble lubed cast boolits in mica to keep them moving through my poor guy bullet feeder. Makes them slick and less prone to getting hung up in the feed/seat die.

So it's mica?
