Looking for suggestions on a cast bullet to use in my 6.5TCU 10" Contender for silhouette matches. I'm thinking it will need to be approximately 140 grains to carry enough momentum to the 200 meter line to reliably knock over the full-size rams. FYI, I've used the RCBS 7mm/145 Silh mould in the past with good results in a 10" 7mm TCU barrel.

BTW, it would be nice if the bullets from the mould for my 6.5 TCU also worked in my 6.5mm rifle cartridges (260 Bobcat, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55).

Thanks in advance!

The 150gr. Lyman works quite well in all my 6.5 rifles. The RCBS one has a nose too fat to chamber in most guns. (at least my example does.)

Nobade- that's for the info. BTW, what's the number on your Lyman mould for that 6.5/150 bullet and does it take gas checks?

WAY BACK when we were doing GBs direct from Lee didn't we do a 120 grain PB 6 cavity mold.

I could swear we did, and yet I have a 140 grain GC mold.

Did someone do a 120 PB mold GB or am I delusional?

Cast a bunch and as of yet have not shot one.

Will remedy that this month!

My 6.5x55 and 6.5TCU refused to cooperate using the same bullet.

JSH- thanks for sharing your thoughts. What cast bullet(s) worked well in your 6.5s? I wonder if that Lyman 150 cast is too long for the twist rate in most T/C barrels chambered for the 6.5 TCU?

Hmm, that's interesting. What were your twist rates? I used a 1:8 in the 6.5 TCU and the 6.5X55 is even faster, about 1:7.

Nobade- it sounds like you have a custom 6.5TCU barrel? Most of the factory T/C Contender barrels in 6.5TCU I've seen only have twist rates of around 1-in-10" or even slower. Most of them will only stabilize jacketed spitzer bullets up to about 120-129 grains. I can usually get the Hornady 140 gr SP flat base to stabilize but it's 'touch and go'. In an attempt to get better stablization out of my Contender barrel for silhouette matches, that's part of my wanting to try a flat base/semi-spitzer flat nose cast bullet of approx. 140 grains.

Yes, I used a Krieger blank from an F class rifle, the last half was still in good shape so it made a good 6.5 TCU. I didn't know TC used such a slow twist.

I do have the 6.5 Kurtz, originally from BRP moulds now made by NOE. If the throat in your barrel is pretty long, it is a very good bullet as well. Since it's a Loverin style it needs lots of throat.

I don't remember the exact twists for the 6.5TCU but I do know the 2 I had at the same time were different. I kept the 14" and sold the 10". I have not tried cast yet in mine.

Yup, twist rate on OEM T/C Contender barrels have varied over the years. I kept this 6.5TCU barrel just because it was twisted tighter than the others but I wish it were at least 1-in-9.
