Came home with me today, Combat Masterpiece 38spl, is a single action only made only 2 years I believe, 61 & 62.
Is in pristeen condition. Now to get some 38's loaded up and play. Looks real nice next to my Mod 17, still have not shot that one either 'yet'. Ya I know "pics". Maybe sometime.
OK, I misspoke, UPDATE--14-1 is a K-38 Target Masterpiece, is a single action. 17 (no digit) K-22 Masterpiece, both are 4 screw models. 14-1 is a 1961 mfg, 17 is a 1958 mfg. Mod 39-2 is a 70/72 mfg, unfired, new in the box. PICS !!!!!!!!! Are you happy now ?

A model 14 is the 6" target, the Model 15 is the 4" Combat Masterpiece in .38 Spl. Look at the frame
where the cyl crane closes, it should say the model.

That said -- I have what is apparently a Model 14 (6" target barrel and target front sight) but it
is marked M15-3 in the crane area. My GUESS is that a PD ordered a few hundred or thousand
Model 15s for the officers and a few or few dozen target model guns for the pistol team..... and
it was easier to mark them as Model 15s to camouflage them into the big purchase order rather
than make them stick out like a sore thumb as a different kind of gun that the bean counters
may have choked on.

And I have had several real Model 14, which look exactly like my Model 15 --- which is a Model
14 as far as what it physically is.

Anyhow, they are BOTH wonderful guns, you will enjoy it.

Yes, a 6 inch Mod. 15 is interesting. I looked in Roy Jinks' book where one would expect to find it, and as far as he was concerned a 6" was a Mod. 14 and a 4 " was a Mod. 15, but otherwise they were the same gun. He said that when a demand developed for a 4" Mod. 14 it was designated the Mod.15, but is otherwise the same. Then I looked in "The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson", 2nd Edition, and it says "...and later offered in 1986 with a 6 inch or 8 3/8 inch barrel ....". The front sight may be the main difference, described as "1/8-inch Baughman Quick Draw front sight on a plain ramp base". Under "Engineering and Production Changes" it says "15-3 1967 Relocation of rear sight leaf screw. 1968 Delete diamond insert grips". The Mod. 14 is always described as having a Patridge front sight, so maybe the difference is in the sights.?. Of course, re-barreling is always a possibility also. Well, if Swaneedb won't show us his, I'll show mine:

The Masterpiece-series revolvers are WONDERFUL shooters. I currently have 6" examples in 22 LR (M-617) and 32 H&R Magnum (M-16-4) on hand, and long ago traded off a 6" M-14 in a foolish move at the time my shop converted to autopistols. With divorce looming, such dispositions seem at the time to be reasonable.......in retrospect, I should have kept the wheelgun and lived on Top Ramen for a few months longer. Years later, a Colt Officer's Model Target came along to fill that hole in the fabric of existence. I've managed OK since then.

YUP! Have old early model 14 and model 17 both with 6" barrels. Both are far more accurate than I am anymore.Robert

9.3X62AL, as Bill would say, "I feel your pain." The ones that got away always remain in our memory and seldom seem to come around again. I've also got a Mod. 16, great shooter, and a very similar Taurus M-96 that slightly outshoots it.

Nice shooters. I have a 14-3. At one time Brownells offered a SA kit for these with a hammer change. They were also available to be converted back with a similar kit.

I believe I would have to make sure that 39 works. But that's just me....

Looks like three very nice S&W's.

I have pre-14 Target Masterpiece that is an extremely good shooter. The cylinder throats and the barrel all spec perfectly for cast. All I ever needed to do is shoot it.

My favorite auto loading pistol of all time is the S&W model 39. I have owned two and let them slip away. I will never get over feeling stupid over that bone head move. I do have a four inch Combat Masterpiece in .22 LR but I rarely shoot it.
