This gun started out as a very rusted/pitted action I picked up at The Baltimore Gun Show a few years ago. Very few of the innards were usable, so parts were scrounged far and wide. Bear in mind it is a concept gun that doesn't represent any cataloged model, although a PG perch belly stock with crescent butt plate could have been special ordered 100 years ago. I lettered it and learned that it started out as a M1899H TD, .22 HiPower and was sent to the warehouse on 11/18/13 and shipped to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis, MO, on 2/9/14.

I barreled it with a pristine .22 HP barrel, and have a shorty 18" .22HP barrel and .25-35AI barrel that fits it also- making a three barrel set. All the steel bits are rust blued, lever freshly color case hardened, Lyman 30 1/2 tang sight. Wood has 12 coats gloss spar varnish, sanded between coats with 320x, final coat gloss rubbed out and then waxed to impart a soft luster.

Wow, looks just like it ought to. Nicely done, very nicely done.

Whew! That is absolutely beautimous. Very nice work. A three barrel set is over the top. Probably not another set-up like it anywhere.

Very interesting round, a bit controversial even after all these years. When can we expect a range or loading bench report?

Jacketed Hornady 70 grain .228, shortened to .750" so it stabilizes in the old Savage barrels, over 24 grains 4895 (my go-to hunting load)= a good solid 1 1/2" with the pictured barrel with an occasional 1" (luck) and 2" group thrown in. Cast loads are running around an inch at 50 yds., but she whispers to me that she can do better than that!

Accuracy with the 18" barrel is similar but not quite as good. The .25-35AI barrel is still waiting its turn up to bat.

I love the .22 HP cartridge (I have a few rifles) because it's different, which fits right in with my oddball outlook on life! :)

I like the sounds of your hunting load, guessing that's a pretty heavy jacket on that Hornady bullet. What are you loading under cast? Do you HT the boolits?

Being the red headed step child of the 22 cals. Just got to love that often picked-on H-P. {Tink jealousy has allot to do with that.} BTW: nice job smoothing out that rough receiver sir.

I found 7gr. Unique and a 60 grain cast bullet to be a good Universal Load in my .22HP's. 12gr. 4759 being another one. As for heat treating, I haven't heat treated a bullet since around 1989. I prefer to use straight linotype if I (rarely) feel the need for a hard bullet.

The Hornady jackets are relatively thick and perform well. It's just a shame I have to shorten them in a file trim die so they stabilize well in the 1-12" twist.

Really nice job. Was that an original stock that you restored, or did you make a new one?
I love to find old, nearly junk guns and make them look like new again.

it takes a master to build a custom gun that looks like finer factory work.

kudos.

Made a new one. I did use an original fore arm though.

Nice piece of work there, Gary. I like it a lot.

Just something about a Savage 99, so elegant and yet so functional.

I have three 99's 250-3000,300 Savage and 303 Savage. Love them all. Yours is a beautiful restoration. Hard to find a 22 HP in original condition that I would have.
