Sunday in the KC area was really nice, wind under 8 mph, temps in the
upper 60s and pure sunny day. I had been working on som target loads
for one of my K31s to take up to Nebraska for the Swiss Rifle Match on the
17th, but I also had some 311413s I picked up really cheap at a gunshow
unsized. I size them to .311" with a GC and tried out some of the 'normal'
cast boolit powder charges for milsurp rifles. I struck some gold first time
out, although only trying them at 50 yds, as this is my first try with cast
in the K31s. I 'cheated' by using the scoped K31 with a 2-7X NCstar in
the scout mount replacing the rear sight. Also, I was using my new
Hornady dies made specifically for the K31 chamber. The excellent seater
is another reason that I am a big fan of the newer Hornady dies, both
for rifle and pistol. Seating the boolit (or bullet) straight is very important
and these dies typically give well under .005" tip runout on the dial gauge.
This is one factor that I wish I had understood 25 years ago! :-(

The "universal load" -- 10.0 of Unique, shot extremely well, as it has many
times before for me. My other solid starting load of 16.0 2400 did real well,
as did 15.0 IMR4227. Only 20.0 of IMR4198 disappointed, and then only
just a bit. It was a great day. Now to load the same loads again and test
them at 100 yds. Any time all of the loads for a new boolit in a new rifle go
into 1.6" or less at 50 yds seems like a big winner to me. :bigsmyl2:

Bore was shiny clean at the end, zip leading and a nice black star, not too
'lub-ey' but seemed to be acceptable. Also, 357Maximum gave me some nice
red lube a while back and these were lubed with what I call MaxRed lube.
Thanks again - the lube is a bit stiff, I may mix a tiny bit of vaseline in the
next time I melt some for the sizer, but otherwise works great!

These are really fantastic rifles, and there are some really great folks on this site,
where I have learned a lot more about reloading for cast.

Those are 1 inch squares.

I got to shoot my K31 today and I am in the process of working up my cast loads for it. I am shooting a 200 grain with gas check because my K31 seems to prefer the heavier bullets. Here is a 10 shot group from today. First 5 shots are in the circle while 3 of the next 5 are in the circle and two are out of the circle. These were two different loads. Distance was 66 yards.

My K31 seems to like the 311291 @ .310Ø/FWFL and 18.5 BD, about 2-2½ inches @ 100 with battle sights and "IF" I do my part.

Go take a look at swissrifle.com for some simple tuneup steps that can improve accuracy.

Jack,

I don't see the pics. What 200 gr boolit are you using?

My mold is a single cavity 200 grain .309 #90370. It could be I just haven't been using the right combination with the other bullets but the 200 grain took right off with my K31.

Great group. I may get one of the Lee molds. I have been looking at their
150, IIRC, which they claim is 'accurate' (target symbol on the web site) which
may mean absolutely nothing in the end.

Thanks for sharing.
