A packing sixgun you can carry every day while roaming the hills or fields or streams. This year I'm using a short Ruger BH & mostly a 45 ACP cylinder in place & one load, the Lyman 452374 & 5 grains of Promo. While out & about Wednesday shot a few clay birds at 50 & 75 steps & even a couple cylinders full at a new found long range target. I'll be using the longer cylinder some later but for now it's all about mastering the gun the way it is. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

I really enjoy the .45 ACP. Have a Dillon Square Deal B dedicated to it. Was out a with a couple of different platforms a while back and shot this picture with my flip phone.

Nice sixgun Lynn, I have several 45's that work just fine as woods bumming guns. One is a S&W 45 Colt Mountain gun, I've had it cut for moon clips so I can use 45 acp's in it. With the 4" barrel its an easy packer & a great shooter. It also gets carried in the city quite often.
Another is a S&W 3" 696 5 shooter in 44 special, these are on the L frame, also very easy to carry but very effective at handgun distance with a lead 240 gr. HP at "mind your business" velocities.

Boy Lynn, those pictures make me wish I was there with you and a few of my 50 caliber ammo cans full of .44s and .45s along with some camping equipment. Who needs Disneyland when you have that?

Understand. This is coal country southwest of Beckley, WV around the small uninhabited town of Tams. The cliff is part of a strip bench.

Yer 44 Special would most likely be better at that cliff than my 45 ACP loads. I shot 2 cylinders at the shinny rock using only the door window to steady my aim. I had a couple shots within 3 foot but most were 10 to 15 foot off best I could tell. I will explore this more in the days to come.

I need a S&W 45 ACP sixgun. I watch Jerry Miculek shoot his & dream. And Dick I didn't know there was a city anywhere near you.

I lived most my life in the depressed areas of southern West Virginia coal fields. There's not much here but because of all the land company holdings I can get in the woods. It's nothing like the great northwest or the desert highlands of the southwest but I can roam & engage targets of opportunity. And it is surely better than Disneyland.

I have two, the dedicated .45 ACP gets the most use. I broke a link arm and sheard off the shell plate bolt. As I'm sure you know, Dillon has a no BS warranty, and took care of me.

Purchased my SD 1990 to load my 4" M29. Somewhere long about the 7th year the handle broke & that's all the trouble I've had but it's not as smooth as new.

Lynn, yes there's a city or two not too far away, we even have electricity now. Still plenty of places to get lost & just shoot all day or catch a few trout. I'm not as fast as Jerry but I can still make a revolver spin pretty fast even at 71. My Dr. took a video of me 2 years ago down in Az. Its on You Tube, Dick Thompson speed shooting, you might be able to find it. 6 shots, 3 on 2 different targets from the draw in 1.86 seconds.

I think it is fairly well known that I favor the 45 ACP revolver as a carry piece. Here are some of mine.

If you want some try this.
Take a 200 swc CM ,or plated or hard cast .
Load to 960fps [ this is the old CCI Blazer 45acp Combat Match loading]
You will be surprised . [neater from a revolver]

I tried a H&G 68 clone from Accurate Molds [45-200-H] with 4.5 grains of Promo. This load shot well but is too slow for field use. I need to load some ammo shortly & will speed this bullet up a bit.

Looking back at what I'be done with a six gun l can see where a 41 would have been the perfect round if there is such a thing.

A .45 is all I have ever carried on the street. Many years ago a cop in Norfolk, VA asked me why I carried a .45, and I will never forget the look on his face when I told him "Because they don't make a .50"

Like you I enjoy a big bore trail gun for woods carry so I was glad to get my short barreled Vaquero converted to a birdshead (Ruger did it, long but good story on that one..) the only problem is that it only shoots to the sights with heavy boolits over max loads of slow powder. It will never be a plinker.

I am and have been toying with the idea of a medium framed Ruger BH convertible with a 5 1/2" barrel and 3 cylinders. One for .45 ACP, one reamed for .45 Schofield and one for .45 Colt. Why? Just because I think it's cool..

Mine is 41 mag because I read a local ad for a great price then the guy threw in a nice holster and a almost full box of ammo. I now like 41 mag.

Lynn, one year I took 8 animals with revolvers including bear & elk, 6 were with the 41 magnum including deer in 3 different states. Its a caliber I've used a great deal since 1967 all over the country. With 250 gr. bullets it doesn't take a back seat to anything really, excepting big bears & most of us never hunt them. I've taken 6 black bears. My first 41 was a 4" model 57 back in 1967.

the best thing about the 41 is the capability of fitting an awesome caliber in a standard Black Hawk frame. I love my 44 Special Flattop, but a 41 is a very close "perfect packing pistol". The 45 just seems a bit bulky compared to the 41/44.

Lynn, the 250 gr. slug I've used the last 10 years or so is one I got from Verl Smith, its a WFN & in my 5 1/2" Bisley its been a wonderful game getter, both deer & elk. It broke both front shoulders on a very large cow at 74 yds & exited, she dropped at the shot. A friend watching said he'd never seen an elk go down that fast. Of course it has a bigger meplat that the famous 250 Keith in 44 magnum & I've taken 5 elk with that bullet.

Lynn, found the video today. If you have a smart phone hold down the power on button & speak into the phone. I said, "Dick Thompson, speed shooting on You Tube". Then I scrolled down to Barranti I think & there were 2 of them, one shooting 9 targets, 5 through a window & 2 more on each end for a total of 18 shots. The trick was, you had to fire at least your first shot through the window & your last shot. With a revolver you want to get away from a standing reload. The other one is 6 shots on 2 targets, 3 on each one, 1.86 seconds from the draw, 7 yds.

Lynn....I have found that bullet pushed at 850 - 900 fps makes an excellent field load and still retains it's accuracy. I have used Bullseye, Unique and AA5 for the job. They all seem to work as well as the other.

The 45 ACP along with the 38 Special are by far my favorite handgun rounds. They both posses inherent accuracy, are easy to load and come in some wonderful packages. For grins here are some of my favorites; A Ruger Flatop 45 Convertible, a Smith and Wesson 25-2 with a chopped barrel and a Norinco 1911A1. So, you can tell, I like both SA and DA revolvers and the autopistol having no particular pick of the litter.
