I found a load that allows me to use powder-coated soft lead bullets in 9mm, while making IPSC Power Factor of over 125.

I modified the Lee 120TC mold by dremeling off the grease groove, adding some thickness. I PC and then calibrate to .358".

Bullet weight is 131-132gr.
OAL 27.5mm.
4.2gr of Vihtavuori N340.
Tested in Beretta 92 and Walther P1, chronoed PF 127 and 129, respectively.
Misc brass, Magtech primers.

Good thinkin'.

I've been doing similar things with other cartridges all winter.

Too bad the grass is startin' to grow.........

Removing the grease grooves may not be needed.

I have many 358 molds some with grooves some without. I PC everything and size to 358.

So far, after trying them all, I have not seen any gain or loss in accuracy by not having grooves.

So I just PC the boolits for all cals, grooves or not.

Guessing he probably deleted the grease grooves to bump up the bullet weight since he's hunting for IPSC power factor and also probably doesn't hurt having more bearing surface. The 124gr is "THE" bullet weight for IPSC/USPSA 9mm competition. I have a 124gr TC/Arsenal bullet I want to do some more testing with. Problem is, for me anyways, I shoot primarily Open Division and with cast bullets, even PC'ed bullets and open base FMJ's, they lead up the comp. The loads are tailored for excessive gas to work the compensator and by nature, the guns require pretty warm loads, even for minor PF to cycle the gun properly. That blast as the bullet traverses the comp, scavenges lead off the bullet bases. It will cut right through the PC and deposit lead in the compensators and the air. Not exactly fun to get cleaned up an that's more lead in the air that I would rather not breath. In my case, I'll have to run gas checks as it stands now to shoot cast in those guns and that adds a lot more time per round to make if I were to punch my own checks. For now, plated boolits in the race guns, they perform, shoot clean, reasonable cost and quick to load. I want to shoot my own cast but that will require time & strategy to develop.

Hats off to Wurgerburger though! Way to make it work!

Exactly correct. The 120TC feeds well and is of almost perfect shape and size. Just too light, and the grease groove is positioned at the case rim unless one loads Very short cartridges.

Probably getting a .45 TC mold too, the Lee RN ogive is too fat.

How much diameter does the PC add?? Does it foul the ramp and chamber??

1/1000" max. No fouling, minimal amount of coal-black residue granules.

Shiloh, jes about anything you'd wanna know about PCing/coating... http://castboolits.gunloads.com/forumdisplay.php?184-Coatings-and-Alternatives
