i have the electronic copy of the 48th lyman reloading book and the cast bullet book.

theres info on unique for 30-06 but its only 11-16 grains...

ive read on here newer books claim 24 gr of unique for the 30-06 ? thats a little confusing to me...

The published Lyman loads will only tell you safe pressure, nothing about accuracy.

If you exceed more than about 16-18 grains of Unique with a well fitting, properly lubricated bullet if 14-16 BGN in the. 30-'06, you will get leading anf poor accuracy. Similarly if you exceed about 20 grains of #2400 or 25 grains of 4227, 28 grains of 4198 or 30 grs. of RL7.

To function my Garand I load 40 grains of 4064, RL15 or Varget for about 2200 fps. I would recommend with those powders start at 35 grains and stop when you get reliable cycling. Limit the fast burners lije Unique to 1600 fps.

It's actually for a pump 3006... Do you get good accuracy at 2200fps?

The '06 is an incredibly tame cartridge when loaded with Unique. I've used everything from 32 cal soup can Boolits @ 90 GRS up to 150 gr cast Boolits with Unique. My favorite cast load in my Win model 70 fwt is a 125gr bullet I buy from Badman bullets online, put it in front of 12 gr of Unique and it is giving me super accuracy inside 50 yds. 50 is my limit for now because of shooting limits at home.

If a hot load is the goal, get a box of Speer plinkers, use one of several powders that are standard j-word '06 loads and you'll see the '06 approach the 4000fps mark.
Turn your thoughts toward accuracy and not how hot a cast load can be loaded to. Lead will do the job at a much slower speed than jacketed bullets will. Thoroughly search this forum and you'll love what you find on reduced rifle loads, mouse fart loads etc

I'm not sure what type of bullet/boolit you are planning to use or its weight so this is really pretty much speculation on my part.

I'm with Outpost and his recommendation. 18 grains and a 150 grain cast boolit is pushing the limits for the Ought-Six. Lighter boolits can take a bit more. Heavier boolits less.

With cast or jacketed 150 grain bullets, start at about 12 grains and work your way up until you get the accuracy you want. Pay attention to all the warning signs on your way up. Unique is a great powder for cast or reduced loads to about 1,800 fps in my experience. Use a slower powder for anything more.

Here is what it does from a rack grade CMP M1 Garand.

In the Lyman cast manual I usually find accuracy closer to the start loads than the max loads. They do not test for accuracy only pressure.

My only 30 cal mold is the 311041 at 177 gr in my alloy. In the 30-06 I've always as a rule of thumb considered 16 gr to be the top for unique and the start for 2400

In my three guns 20 gr of 2400 is accurate, 21 is not. This is where I would start with the next slowest powder per say 4759 or 5744

The 20 gr of 2400 gets me very good accuracy at 1800 fps and kills deer very well. I've seen no reason to go faster. If I hunted more open country I might look for a higher velocity.

I agree , but I would drop the charge to 14 grs of Unique, above that the other powders listed would be more appropriate.

IMO anything over 1600 FPS with cast boolits accuracy drops significantly unless addition ( read lots) of measures are taken.

ESPECIALLY in a pump.

Accuracy is defined as MOA /sub-MOA under 1600 FPS or hunting accuracy 1.5- 3" above 1600 FPS
( my rough definition)

P.S. My friend shooting his M1 at the bench next to me using the Lee 180 2R over 27 grs AA2520 was getting 1.5-1.75" groups @ 100 yds w/ 100 % reliability,
you do not need to hot rod these boolits, nor do you need to worry about the pressure curve effects on the operating rod in the M1 with cast boolits.
