Found this a harbor freight. Long handle. Great for picking up the ones that got away. The hoop inside the handle is the release. $10.00 and it works well. 163719

I use a 4lb magnet off a large speaker, attached to a broomstick, to pick up roofing nails out of the grass after doing a roofing job. It works well. No release, you have to pick the nails off manually, but the price was right.

take a thin cloth sack - but it over the magnet should still pick up all the nails
then turn the sack inside out and pull the nails off. Nails in the sack - dispose and put back on the magnet.

That would work well for steel chaff near the lathe or the drill press too. :)

Thanks for the tip Artful,I knew that but some of the grey matter had deleted it and it needed to be refreshed.

Depending on the type of stainless steel you are using, the magnet may not work to pick it up. Some types of stainless are non-magnetic.

I also use a magnetic out of a speaker, a plastic bag also works to catch the cuttings around a lathe and milling machine.
