Cattleskinner and I did a little mould exchange, he wanted to try my 287308 and I wanted some soup cans. His soupcan showed up yesterday so this afternoon I fired up the lyman pot. It took a little experimenting to figure the "new to me" mould out. It seems to like a high melt temp and a slow pressure pour. Using the BruceB method it ran like gang busters so long as I poured a generous sprue. I did have to stop once and clean the spout.
I'll post a range report first chance I get.

I LIKE that bullet in several 7MM's I have. The 6 hole mold really turns them out fast. I've tried them in the 7TC/U, 7BR, 7-30 and the 708. Trials with the 280 remington are on going. It seems to be very accurate in some calibers and so-so in others. Depending on hardness, they will work on ground hogs very well.

Wonder how it would be in a 7 x 57 Mauser? Looks like a champ. Is the "soup can" mould a production mould or one of the GB's?

This one was a group buy mould run by Oldfeller IIRC. My intent is to try this boolit in a 7-08.

I weaseled my way into one of those moulds for use in a 7-30 Waters lever action , but have yet to get a Marlin rebarreled to it .

Also have one of the Saeco moulds for a 7mm flatnose gascheck bullet for the same project !

I got mine here ,but they have them "on order" now. A call to mid south may give a time line on them.

How large do they cast in wheelweight metal? I need a boolit that casts at .288 for a 1908 Brazilian Mauser...Ray

You sure that's a 7mm "Soup Can?" Doesn't resemble the .30 "Soup Can" that I understood was scaled down for the 7mm at all.

I am interested in this mold, I have the Lee C285-130-R 2C mold and shoot the bullets in my 7TCU with good results.

Oldfeller did the mould with midsouth so they would be a production type mould that will be somewhat available, similar to the 22 bator mould.
The gbs that he ran he has done with midsouth.

ont he midsouth page you can get tot he design drawings under special order moulds.

they weigh 134.5 grains in WW alloy, measure .2832" on the nose and .2874" on the body bands. They also are rather concentric, only being .001" or less OOR. This mould has not been leemented, so polishing the cavities might get you the .288

What is the length of the nose IE last groove to the end of the soup can? I have a 7TCU on a Sako 75 and am restricted by the ejection port and this bullit may solve the problem.

You are very welcome Jerry. Glad it shoots good for you (shot good in both 7TCU's I used to have). I thought it was about perfect for that cartridge.

Got my order into Midsouth for a soupcan mold. It won't be in stock till the end of the month but boy am I looking forward to getting it. I can see a lot of upset wallaby and possums out there in the bush once I start using them in my TCU (rifle). So if anyone has rifle loads for the soupcan in a TCU could you please let me know.
Thanks Juddy

Still waiting!! Hope it'll all be shipped soon. Shift in the US/Aussie exchange rate has cost me $50 extra waiting for that soupcan. Please let it get here soon.

MidSouth is accepting back orders on this mold, my guess is that they will wait for a certain amount of back orders before ordering the mold from Lee.
For thoses who have this mold, does the spru plate give good clean cutoffs ?? It looked like it "jumped" on several bullets in the "PRODUCTION" picture ??

Wayne, I got one of the last batch of 7mm soupcans and it is without a doubt the sweetest operating 6 cav lee I own, and I don't have a bad one in the bunch! But that 7mm is sweeeeet-boolits fall like rain, sprues look like a bright spot on the base of the boolit.........in fact, just threw a few hunnert the other day and am in the process of checking, sizing and lubing right now.....good luck, I think you will be happy......[smilie=p:

IF you mean the molds, go back up till you see a link to MidSouth, they are taking back orders on 6 cavity molds

how would that bullet shoot in a 280 remington over a dose of red dot or unique? I want a low power-low noise plinker

It will shot fairly well in about any 7MM barrel. I've used it in 7tc/u, 7IHMSA, 708 and 280 remington. I have not settled on a specific load for any of them YET. It tends to group well (sub 2") in all of them with the normal powders for the calibers at up to 2100 FPS. I have 3 different 7tc/u barrels and am TRYING to get one load to work in all three(10,14 and 21") Since I don't use the 10" at very long range and they 21" IS used for 150+ yards, I'm going to start with it. Then see what THAT load does in the other two.
I tried some ultra low doses of bluedot and got decent accuracy at 50 yards BUT the group was extremely low . I couldn't get enough elevation with a Leupold scope to get centered.! Groups were in the 1/2 to 3/4" range . The bullet did penetrate phone books and gallon milk jugs though.

I got several of these and lube & sized then .286, loaded them over 8.0 Gn of Unique, also loaded some 070 SAECO's and 145 RCBS's, both the saeco and rcbs shot into 1.5 from a 14"T/C with a 3" scope mount, the 'soup cans wouldn't stay inside a paper pie plate.
Any suggestions ??
thank you "KEEPER 89" for the bullets

Tom,
Do you remember if this was the group buy that Oldfeller, I think, ran. Or was this the second iteration.

I think Oldfeller did some Leementing on the moulds before shipping them. I asked him to lap one out slightly oversized for my old 7 Mauser Chilean, which he did.

He may have ruffled some feathers around here from time to time, but I always got along with him.

Wayne, my bullets are sized to .287" (if at all). I've used a lot of different powders .I even Teflon taped some to see what woul happen. Accuracy at 100 yards was never over 6" and most groups are inside 2 1/2". OF course I am NOT standing like in your avatar, but sitting at a bench with a good rest. and a 2x7 scope. The soup can has worked in 3 7TC/U barrels,a 7-08 ,7IHMSA, 7BR and a .280 rem. My buddy uses them in his 7Mauser! We take turns shooting clay pigeons on the 150 yard berm with the soup can. I know you have slugged your bore and are using the correct size bullets for it. I'd try a fatter bullet just to see what it does. My alloy has been ac ww or Lyman #2 hornady gas checks. Linotype did not work as well in my guns!
