Anybody know what's going on? Other powders are available, including Alliant products, but 2400 is nowhere to be found.

This is the reply I got from Alliant when I asked why no 2400.

My crystal ball is not that clear. I have tried to assure people in the past that the powder shortage would be over, but that has come up to bite me so many times I quit doing that.
All I can say is that I have seen this propellant on the shelves of my local dealers in the last few months. It didn't last long as you can imagine. But, things are improving and we are seeing more and more propellant on the shelves today than we were a couple of years ago. So, hopefully, and don't hold me to this, the situations should be improving soon. On a side note I have seen this propellant on the shelves in my local dealers, but it also didn't last very long.
Thanks,

I too have seen this one the shelf. Like other powders it is hit or miss kind of deal. One dealer actually had a couple 8 pounders.

Ballistic supply gets it in occasionally but it doesn't last long. You can back order some through them, however and just wait it out. I have 15# on back order with them. Don't know when it'll ship, but it will at some point. I'm guessing 3-4 weeks before my order ships.

Neither do fast/medium fast pistol powders. 231, Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, and others.

LGS here has a shelf full of powder including BE and 2400. Also a couple 1 lber's of Unique. I have plenty for now but if I get some "mad" money I may pick up a few more pounds.

My local supply - http://www.phillipswholesale.com/news---updates.html (Phillips Wholesale) in Pomona Ca. - has two 8 pounders and 12 1 pounders on the shelf as we speak, as well as 231, Unique and Bullseye. I've noticed that for the past 6 months it has been showing up in greater frequency...

I called as quickly as I could. They won't ship, and California is too far for me to drive this weekend. :-)

For anyone in the east-central Illinois or St. Louis Metro area in need of Alliant Powders. Went out on a 'road trip' (Amish bulk foods outlet and a couple of rural antique barns) with my wife today. Stopped by a small - but well-stocked - gunshop in a small town along the way and picked up a couple lbs. each of 2400 and Unique to 'top off' my supply. Shop is Zancha's in Lovington, IL and, while I was there, they were loading their cargo trailer for a gunshow in East St. Louis this weekend. They have Unique, 2400, B'eye, and several of the ReLoader grades in stock along with many of the Hodgen and Accurate numbers.

I believe 2400 comes from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. ATK is one of the tenants. I suspect 2400 is one of many powders competing for the same workspace. 2400 seems to be extruded stick and the trend is toward spherical powders which started as a way to reprocess surplus powders. I doubt they will add capacity to older processes.

After 3 years not seeing 2400 I switched to Accurate #9 (4"&6" 44Mag) which is now a spherical powder. This batch is a little hotter/faster than my last batch of 2400 (which was slow). Accurate's 5744 would be a good candidate to replace 2400, it's an extruded stick, almost always available, but at $240 an 8 lb jug. Just a mater of money.;-)

Only way I ever got a 8lb jug of 2400 was at a local gun show. The dealer and I have had a long relationship and he mentioned he could give me a good deal on it. I asked him to put it on the side and would be back for it. Soon as he pulled it out someone asked for it. Said it was already sold. I've bought a bunch of stuff from him over the last 20 years. He went through about a 100 West German sig P6's in about 3 weeks. And got one of them too. No one in town sells reloading stuff so it's either gun show or bite the bullet and order it, that is if anyone has what I'm looking for. Frank

I bought a 1 pound jar almost 4 years ago and lost it in the bag with the sales receipt. That's how I know when I got it. That was the last of it I've seen since.

I found 8lbs online back in Sept of '15...that was the first that I had found since before Sandy Hook. My friend was at BassPro in Macon Ga, week before last and they had 2400, Power Pistol, HS-6, Bullseye, Lil Gun, and several others, on the shelf. I have not seen those powders in several years, either.

I had pick it up when I was seeing it in the store and just build up what I feel ok with. But like is stated that it is not that common. I know Alliant dose alot of mil ammo .So that takes up alot of the powders of there.

I recently got some after a multi year wait. A Sportsman's Warehouse opened recently near me. Their powder stock was such that I hadn't seen in years. There is one in Roanoke. http://storelocator.sportsmanswarehouse.com/?taskID=list&siteZipCode=&siteStateProv=VA

Here in West Tn have seen 2400 in a while--as mentioned in an earlier post, I have been using AA9 (AA@9) -in the .41( the only handguns I have ) the two powders are very much alike

I know we want what we want --so good luck in your powder search

No joy here in the Puget Sound area and I even have a friend in the gun business. I was just at Cabella's last week and it was a no go there too. I'm heading down to Centralia for the gun show in a bit, so perhaps I'll stumble into some there. While most my calibres do well with similar powders, it's always nice to have a mix of powders to choose from in the magazine.

I check a couple LGS's and Cabela's around here every couple weeks and haven't seen any 2400 or Bullseye in at least a year.

This powder issue is to the point that i just purchase 8 lbs when I need powder in lots of 48 lbs. I'm tired of race tracking around looking for powders locally to try etc. If it's not available in 8s, i buy at least 5 lbs in singles so I'm not in the same situation in a week to a month looking again for powder. Primers have always been 5k per type and at least 20k shipped. Time to build another magazine.

Had some luck at the Centralia gun show on Saturday.

The big score for me was several pounds of HP 38 (ran out of it and 231 earlier this year) at just $20.00 a pound. Hmm... $20.00 a pound... in my mind that's still expensive, but in reality given the current market I guess it was a pretty good deal. Now it's on to the 45 ACP loading project that's been on hold until 231 or HP 38 showed up again.

Didnt know that folks still go to the Centralia show, or the Lacey one too.

I planned to stock up while on a road trip in Jan-Feb. Came home with only 2# of HP-38 and 4 boxes of small pistol primers.

The clerk in the Phoenix Sportsmans Warehouse laughed in my face when I asked for Unique and 2400.

I didn't stop in every gun store, however. People around the big cities drive like crazed vicious rats.

Shoot-n-lead, I second that. I was in the BPS last week and picked up a pound of 2400. They had more left and I figured i'd leave the rest for the next guy.

I don't have any trouble getting 2400. I know where there is some on the shelf in a store right now. He may even have an 8 pounder or 2.

Bottom line is if the person at your local store does not try very hard as in very often to order it. They will simply miss out when it's available and the guy I buy from will get it. :)

Have not seen any in 3 years. Just like the stories of the Yeti, Big Foot, et.al, when I ask for2400 at one of the shops, they say "If you'd have been here between the hours of 1:32 and 1:33 a month ago you, could have bought the only one we had in the last year".

I know this thread is about 2400 but since I have 24lbs of it and dont need more... I went to a gun show this last weekend and saw an 8# tub of Green Dot powder and I wanted it. I walked up with my son in law and had to ask him what the price was (didnt have my glasses with me) he said $350.00 I literally laughed in the guys face when he asked if I wanted to buy it.

Usually I hate posts that offer nothing to contribute but guess I'm reminiscing and gloating. I still have 6-7 pounds of Hercules 2400 in 4 pound containers. I love the powder.

If they had 2400 it was gone by 4 pm when I got the email. A boatload should be enough for me to get some. :-(

What they didn't have was $36 more per #8 jug than I paid last time.

I stopped in to the local Scheel's store today and asked about 2400 powder in stock. Yes it was, although other places in town have not had it. I bought a couple of pounds which is sufficient for my needs. This store is a good place to check for 2400.

Last weekend at the gunshow, I was stunned-I got three pounds of 2400 and a 4 pounder of WW-231--they had some 8 pounders but those were gone by the time I got there.

The only powder I have not seen in the last three years now is Bullseye.
