A fellow Cast Boolit's member ...Jon in Glenco's parents are having trouble . Their names are Roger and Ronae , Roger is a WW 2 vet and has heart/medical problems , Ronae his mom is having hip surgery IN THE MORNING . She is her husbands caregiver . They are in their mid to upper 80's . Roger is in a care facility until Ronae can recover enough to bring him home . Jon has a long drive and is going to drive it in the morning to help and stay with his mom during and after she has the surgery. His dads care facility is 25 miles away.

This is a hard situation for the whole family, Jon is going to be stretched thin and hard put plus his folks are separated for now with medical problems. Please pray hard on this one for all involved .

Good morning heavenly Father. I come to you to request that you be with Jon in Glenco's parents Ronae and Roger. Ronae is having hip surgery and please guide the medical team that is doing the surgery. Guide them and be with them during this delicate surgery. Be with the medical team that will care for and perform her therapy. Father, I am also asking that you help the medical personnel that are caring for Roger's heart problems. Roger needs his wife back to help not only be his mate but to help care for his needs. Father all is possible through You and I humbly ask that You guide these medical personnel that are tending to these two people. In Your Name I pray.....Amen

My Mom is out of surgery and in her room, and obviously feeling good, she asks me if I want to go the outdoor show tomorrow. I'm thinking no, but decide to turn it around on her and ask her if she wants to go. She says, "Well YEAH, I like to go there and walk around and see all the booths, that's were
I got the good can opener" [smilie=p:

My Dad and I watched a John Wayne WWII normady invasion movie this afternoon. Not much else happening at that nursing home on a saturday. the weather was very nice for northern MN, many residents there were sitting outside on a patio.

Mom is trying to get him moved to back to their town, but there was no one there to talk to, I guess we wait til Monday. Not much other new news.
Later,
Jon

God bless you, your mom and dad. Your mother has lots of pluck; gotta love the pluck. We must never underestimate our elders. They've seen more, done more and survived more. "Giving up" is not something with which they're familiar.

Prayers, respect and regards for you and especially your folks.

rl69 and others,
Things in general are going good.

While my Dad would like to be moved to a nursing home in their hometown, he says he really likes it at the facility he's in, and says the food is 5 stars.

My Mom had hopes of being released from the hospital 1 or 2 nights after hip replacement surgery, that's not happening. Mostly because of this being a weekend, some of the specialists that need to check her abilities and such and inevitability approve her release, aren't working, so maybe Monday afternoon, we are told.

I'm staying at their apartment and sleeping good. I appreciate all the prayers and the couple PM's for support. I wish you all well from northern MN.

Today is another day visiting my Mom in the hospital. Mom is doing good, and hoped to be released today...but her sodium is Low, so she needs to stay in the hospital til that is corrected.

Meetings with Doctors, nurses, PT, OT, social worker...has been a roller coaster. First it was suggested that she be transferred to "rehab" in a nursing home for a week or two, before coming home...then later, it appears they are changing their mind, as she is doing better than most 65 year old hip patients usually do (she is 85).

An the continued 'negotiations' trying to get my Dad transferred to their hometown...it hasn't gotten difficult, yet. it just takes time.

Thanks again for all the prayers.

Jon in helping many folks with nursing homes, tell them what you want not what they want to tell you to keep someone. Lord give Jon your wisdom to accomplish what is best for his parents, you guide him and strengthen him to do this journey. We all stand together to unite in prayer for Jon's mom and dad. Heal them and help Jon.

Boaz

Jon , they can probably get the sodium situation cleared up pretty quick with a bag of slow drip saline . Your mom has done great for her age ! Your right on the administrative/medical run around , it's crazy . It's coming together though and a lot quicker than I thought considering their age . It's a good deal !

JonB_in_Glencoe
03-14-2016, 03:56 PM
They are treating the low sodium condition, only, by limiting water/fluids intake...for now. They believe it arose from her drinking too much after recovery(because she was very thirsty) along with having the IV feeding tube in longer than seemingly needed.

We got the details of my Dad's transfer ironed out... I'll pick him up Wednesday, and take him to "Golden Horizons"...such a cliché name [smilie=l:

Thanks again for all the prayers, they are surely working.

My Mom's Sodium has gotten better. she is being released this afternoon, so I can bring her home. Tomorrow, I will go to pickup Dad...and it appears the weather is turning, from Spring back to winter...winter advisory for this area starting tonight and maybe 3 to 8 inches of snow by Noon tomorrow....and I need to pickup my Dad at 10am. Hopefully the ground up here is thawed enough to melt most of it...and mostly importantly that it doesn't build up on the roads...I can handle most MN winter driving conditions, but I dislike snowpacked/slippery roads with blinding snow blowing in the wind...it's tough to see the lines.

So, now that I won't be spending most of the days in the hospital, my internet availability will be extremely limited til I get back home... I'm unsure if that will be friday or monday or somewhere in between...that's kinda of up to my Mom and how she handles being home. But my guess is she'll do fine without me there, once we get some laundry done....
I got a lot of dirty clothes for her to wash ...LOL

My Mom's close friend came for a visit yesterday. They chatted and laughed for an hour. Mom's friend is a firecracker for sure...She will drive that electric chair all over town, summer and winter...and this is northern MN, As well as day or night...She is a smoker and drinker, and will go bar hoping in that chair...CRAZY !

Jon, thanks for the pic. Sometimes, pics really DO speak 10,000 words, and it's quite evident that your Mom is a real Force of Nature. You really come from good stock, sir, and you need to thank the Giver of All Things for that. Her friend is obviously a powerful force as well, and I love to see someone with that kind of spirit and love of life and all the good things in it.

My diabetic aunt needed an operation well into her 80's, and the docs did all they could to try to talk her out of it, saying her chances of surviving it weren't good. This was years ago when diabetes wasn't so easily treated or coped with during surgeries. She looked them boldly in the eyes and told them that she was NOT going to live with the pain she had, and if THEY wouldn't do the operation, she'd darn well find another doc who would! They did the operation and she flew through it and was out of the hospital very quickly, and before schedule. She had WORK to do at home and at their store! This kind of thing CAN be overdone, of course, but some docs are overly cautious and overly grim in predicting results. She said she had had quite a bit more than her 3 score and 10, and if God wanted her, he could very well have her, but she was NOT going to deal with this kind of pain, and if it meant her life, she was ready to go whenever God called her home. That's the way she'd always lived, and she died eventually, peacefully of course. I think God has a special place in his heart for people like that. So many lack real passion today! It's good to see ol' gals like your Mom taking whatever comes by the horns and givin' it what fer! Give her a hug for me, if ya' will. THAT is the kind'a woman I can RESPECT!

The last two days have been a whirlwind.

Same day as the photo above was taken, My Mom was released to go home (tuesday). I got her home and all setup, as best I could. She is doing real good, the Docs say she is recovering better than most people 25 years younger having the same surgery. She gets around the apartment also better than before. She'll should be fine, without me (starting saturday), with a nurse visit once or twice a day, to help with compression socks.

Tuesday late afternoon, we got word that my Dad could be moved from the city 25 miles away, to their hometown. So, I went there Wednesday morning, picked him up and brought him to "Golden Horizons" in their hometown. He has more than just a a room in a nursing home. It's a small apartment. Officially it's called Assisted Living with home care. Only lightly furnished...So, besides a bed, a night table, a couple chairs, a TV, and a coffee table and Lamp (sans the bulb). We needed to furnish everything else...water glasses, towels, TP, waste baskets, laundry hamper, clock, and ect ect. The folks had most of the stuff (as extras) in their home. BUT, it took several trips to (and fro) ...ever couple hours He'd call, as there was a another needed item to fetch and deliver. LASTLY, a clock, It had to be electric, and it had to be seen in the dark. Mom didn't want to give up their bedroom clock-radio...So we went to a thrift shop in town called "Toby's". The only one they had, was a pink "Disney" castle digital alarm clock radio. Bonus, it projects the time onto the ceiling. Double Bonus, it has a button to activate the theme music from several Disney movies.
Looks exactly like this
http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/images/g/x~YAAOSwUV9WmrB4/s-l225.jpg
All for $2. If another resident swipes it, it'll be easy to track down

Dad seems happy at the new location, Mom is surely happy that he is in town. My personal opinion, I don't think Dad is looking as good as I think he should...Maybe it's better lighting at the new facility? It looks like he has more open sores on his diabetic legs. and maybe a couple new ones, on his arm...that hadn't had any sores before.
More later,
Jon

Things have moved forward in a good way Jon , I'm really glad everyone is getting settled . Your sure right about those sores of your dads , being diabetic that could be a real problem . I kind of want one of those clocks !

Boaz, and all.
I'm back home...finally. It was good to be with my parents, but it's good to be back home too. Nothing much changed with my Dad, except my Mom and I voiced our opinion with the head nurse. The next day, they had bandaged the leg sores better and time/date coded them. He has a Doc appt on tuesday.

My Mom and I chased around town on friday, to get several things, that she'll need for the next several days...hopefully holding her over, til her Doc appt on thursday, to see if she'll be allowed to drive.

I got home late friday night...Honestly, all I did yesterday was make a pot of coffee and fire up the wood stove, chat with friends and neighbors, unpack and do some laundry...Oh, and shovel snow :-(

Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers,
Jon

Thank you for all the updates. The right thing to do, doing right by your parents, even though it sounds like a vexing and taxing experience for you. My parents are in their mid 80s (mom) and late 80s (dad), and this reality is not any easy one.
God Bless you for all you are doing for your parents.
