I want to build a 45 caliber underhammer slug gun and posted an ad in the for sale/wanted section with the details. I normally buy my parts kits from Pecatonica River and they were told they can't get 45 caliber 1 in 18 twist barrels from their supplier since they have had issues with people trying to make 45-70 caliber rifles?

I would like an unfinished full length barrel if possible.

I found a barrel, an unfinished BPCR 45 caliber 1 in 18 and we'll use that. Finished length should be 34 inches or so.

If not, Try the gun works. http://www.thegunworks.com/ Oregon barrels will make you whatever you want. The last few I had made, I had in hand about 2 weeks after ordering. Im very happy with the quality, so far, every one is a shooter. They can install the breech, make tenons, pretty much whatever you want. Great people to deal with.

Try Track of the wolf. Green mountain sells 45 1-18 barrel blanks for whatever use you make of it.

I do not understand pecontica's barrel makers problem. 1-18 is a standard 45-70 bpcr twist not usually used in a ML

Muzzle loaders usually have a deeper groove depth. A cartridge barrel will have a groove diameter of .458" and a muzzle loader barrel will be close to .470"
Jim Carpenter makes muzzle loading barrel at a good price (208-582-2091). He bought Orion barrel company several years back.

The folks at Pecatonica told me they use Green Mountain for their barrels and said they got their 50 caliber barrels in but fast twist 45 caliber straight sided barrels were not being made at this time for some sort of "insurance" reasons? I'll try the BPCR barrel and it should work okay with the underhammer setup I want to try out with the 540 grain bullets. I did call the Oregon barrel company and was told about 2 1/2 months for a 1 in 18 45 caliber barrel? I'll call Jim Carpenter and see what he sez.

I will keep my 24" twist .458" bore diameter New Englander and proud to thank you much.
Surely some people want a faster twist for heavier and longer range but I've found standard off the shelf rifle molds to be that Goldie Locks range for nominally .45 bore shooting. Lymans 457124 is the fave so far. And 24" twist allows me to shoot revolver round ball if the mood strikes.

Say, that reminds me. I was supposed to get the 457193 hollow pointed!

the 2 and 1/2 month wait from the oregon rifle barrel co is worth the wait. call douglas, they may be faster. they also make a terrific barrel.

I found a barrel from one of the members on here and he should be getting the $$$$ today or tomorrow. The gun should be a good shooter with the same barrel as the last one I built, under hammer design, 209 primer ignition and the same bullets as I have been using.
