Hello guys, I've got a question on which you might help me. I am looking for a levergun in .44 mag, because of the really high prizes for most of them, my attention got to Rossi. Especially the m 175 in stainless steel with that octagonal barrel looks interesting. But then a bulletcaster in a german forum told me, that the Rossis would have a slightly larger bore than usual, so that gas cutting ruins your precision. Does any one of you own a rossi in .44 who could tell me hiy experiences about them?
Have a nice evening,
Timo

With Rossi, it just depends. Some have had issues, some haven't. You don't know until you get it home. I was worried about a 45 colt one I bought, but shoots fine w same cast loads my 5 pistols use.

Timo; I have the blued version and like it very much. It is a fairly new rifle, and is much smoother than another R92 I have in 357 Magnum. I has been to the range one time, and was as accurate as I could see with the stock sights and jacketed bullets. It is now in pieces on my reloading bench waiting for me to do the Steve's Gunz modifications to it. Search for his website and order the DVD/spring kit/safety plug/magazine follower. The rifle will be much smoother running after you are done. Mine has the barrel tapped for the scout scope mount, and NOE is now producing and selling improved mounts. My 44 will wear a Burris FastFire III when I am done.
I haven't slugged mine yet, but don't worry about the supposed larger bore. All you need to do is size the boolit to match. I get all my MP special order molds at .434 for this reason.

My marlin is slightly larger. Just size larger. Every gun is different. I have loads of rifles that do not slug normal. That is the nature of the beast.

Hi Tony, .434?!
Impossible for me... I want a rifle using the same ammo as my revolver, and second my mould throws hardly .430 to .431

My Rossi 44 mag preferred 0.432" diameter bullets

Sounds to me like you need to spend Henry money then.

Eventually I will add a 44magnum to the collection, right now I have a ss 357 and couldn't be happier with it.

I will be adding a Rossi 357 lever to my collection. It will be a Stainless one as I will most likely shoot the heck out of it. Just need to decide on the 16" or 20".

I would not pass a 44 mag rossi up. My buddy has one and he shoots only factory ammo out of it. Does just fine.

I have the same rifle , but in 357 magnum , barrel slugs at 357" I cast 158 gn boolits from the Lee mould , havent shot any of those yet , but have shot Jwords in the same weight , maximum load of W296 , Shoots like a bought one.
I had my mag tube fly out once after shooting , fixed that by deepening the detent under the barrel near the muzzle and making a larger diameter screw and a new mag tube plug to suit. Had to do a fair amount of work on the rifle to make it smoother to operate , other wise not too bad a rifle for the money.

Hey guys, I have an offer for a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .44 Mag. But it has the Micro Groove barrel design, I've heard some saying that this will not work with lead bullets. Any experiences with it?

Miro groove works fine but marlins tend to have bores larger then .429-430 mine is .432 I size .433 Ihave three mico groove marlins they shoot cast just fine.

I have a micro grove marlin 44. I shoot nothing but lead. Yes they like a bit larger bullet. You just need to size for that. I will say. I have found powder coated bullets to not matter on the larger size so much. Just me.

Ou man...
Is there any .44 levergun out there using normal (.429 / .430) sized bullets?
As I said, I can't go bigger than .430......

I dont know about henry but they might. I have heard of some of the older Rossi's had tight bores. You could consider a bolt and go Ruger.

Just got a Rossi 92 20" 44 mag. Bbl slugged out at .432 and had to get a .434 mold from NOE to make sure that it would work. Getting Buckshot to make a .433 sizer for me but I took mine out to the range and it shot about 8" high at 50 yards. So that means some type of new sight either scout scope or peep or something. The guns are about $500 (I got mine on sale, it can happen it you are patient shipped from Buds w/ lifetime warranty for $434) But now I have to do something with the sights. Marbles peeps run $120, skinner and steve's guns peeps are about $50. NOE has a scope mount for $40. Add it up your pretty close to a Henry. Now that I have it, I like the gun. I went with Rossi because of the twist rate. both Marlin and Henry have a 1in38 twist and Rossi is a 1 in 30.

You could 'leement' your mold out so it'll cast a .434". Then you could use as cast for your Rossi and size the boolits down to .430" or whatever size your revolver prefers. Or you could look at NOE for a new mold that'll cast .434"

That's the end of the idea running the same rounds through my rifle and revolver...

You could get Dougguy to throat the revolver cylinder to match the rifle's preference. Be cheaper than buying a high-end lever.

Ou man...
I've never assumed this so difficult.... A .44 with another diameter than the .44's I used to know as revolvers...

The problem is that some idjit decided to make .430" the spec for a .44 Mag handgun, and then came back and decided that a .44 mag rifle had to be different so made the spec for the rifle bore .432". It would have made my life a lot simpler if they hadn't done it that way, but on the bright side of things, it gives you an excuse for a new mold. For what it's worth, I have had two of the older 429421s, at least the single cavity ones, and both cast at .434/.435", so there is hope without having to go to a expensive custom oversize mold.

Are even older Winchesters a little wider than a handgun barrel?

I have the Puma .454 and only shoot cast in it and love it. Nary an issue since I bought it back in 03 or 04.

Wasn't the Puma a refinished and also more expensive model?

Wasn't the Puma a refinished and also more expensive model? Not sure. It does have a nice deep blue on it and a dark stain. It is probably my favorite rifle in the stable. Love the look and feel of it. It was before they started putting the Rossi name on them. Says Legacy Sports I think.

Have you slugged the barrel sometime? And if: Is this diameter also larger than the usual diameter of the caliber?

I haven't had any leading issues with it yet so hadn't seen the need to slug.

I have one of these also and shoot lead with no problem.

I wished I had bought it, it was an old original made in Northaven, but before I made my decision to buy it, another man came and gave 750 Euros. I could have gone higher than that, but this was too much for me.
