Is there much difference in these primers? I can find the CCI 250's but no Federal 215's.

I use Federal 210's for the .45/70 ,but those are unavailable right now also.
I believe Third Generation Shooters had some Winchester, and CCI primers.

I've never used magnum primers in any .45-70 load, but I've used the CCI 250 and the Federal 215 Magnum Match interchangeably in the .300 H&H Magnum with full power jacketed bullet loads. According to my chronograph, there was less than 20 fps difference between them; accuracy was identical.

What type of powder are you trying to light?
The CCI BR2 is plenty hot for black powder.

I don't know anything about Blackthorn 209, but I've used 28 grains AA5744 with Lyman #457193 (about 420 grains, ww alloy) in the .45-70 and got excellent accuracy using the standard CCI 200 large rifle primer. However, I suspect the CCI 250 would work as well though suggested charge weight may (or may not) need slight adjustment.

I've used Winchester LRPs interchangeably with Federal 210s with both AA5744 and Goex 2F in my .45-70s without any noticeable difference in POI or group size.

CCI-200 work fine with 5744. Use them all the time myself.

I've shot hundreds of groups for my various 45-70 rifles and I've used about every primer out there. I keep track of group sizes on a spread sheet just to see what performs "best". Just a quick look at what I have on hand at the moment shows WLRM, WLR, Rem 9 1/2, CCI 200, and Fed 210M primers. My favorite powders are 2400, 4759, Rel 7, 5744, and 4198 (not in that order). I always load from mild to moderate and never load for top end loads....I don't like shooting them and the deer don't know the difference. I will say that after shooting all those groups, I have never noticed that primer selection in this caliber hasn't made a statistical difference in group size. That is NOT true with just about any other rifle I've ever owned. I've always found that primer selection made a difference, sometimes quite a bit of difference. I believe the 45-70 is the least fussy caliber I've ever loaded for. Now someone shooting long range silhouette may have different findings. My "long" range is 200 yds.

I use The Fed 215 Match in my BH 209 loads with great results and recently tested the CCI 250s with very good results. Also had one of the better shooters here say he just uses the Regular Winchester Primers in his BH 209 loads. I'm gonna try the Win magnums someday.
