are these some kind of foam rubber or whatever with lead powder in them? has anyone tried to melt these down or throw in a batch. assuming it is lead could I throw it in with other lead I was smelting? I figure worse thing that could happen is I have more crud to skim off the top, but if it isn't lead I don't want it in there, especially if it is zinc. but it seems too heavy to be made with zinc. thank you

take a propane torch to it and see what it does. melt 1 or 2.

I just tossed them. You are talking about the spongy type I assume?

They are Impregnated foam/ rubber, I have a buddy who works at a chevy dealer and says the boxes they come in some time say contains lead and sometimes do not. I have not tried to melt them to recover anything from them. I just put them in with my scrap.

I've seen those as well. I also just pitch them

Don't even waste time and fuel melting them. Throw them away. Re-melting them is a total mess and you will salvage very little usable metal out of them.

I have messed around with them. I agree with everyone else. They're garbage....

+1. Not worth the mess.

+1 for trash the rubber ones along with the other debris. Also skip the lead lined aprons from x-ray offices. Weight not worth the burning plastic/rubber. Spend the money on actual lead.

ok thanks guys, that's exactly what I wanted to know, was pretty sure they had lead due to their weight but didn't know if it was enough to be worth it. have a good day

Plus one they are trash. I kept a few of the bigger ones the make good vise pads for holding brass and screws securely for sawing or filing.
Be well

My tire store guy told me they are made of foam and powdered iron or steel and maybe some other scrap like tungsten, lead, etc. I generally throw them away. The vice jaw pads are a good idea. Most of mine are mildly magnetic so there must be some iron in there somewhere.

They make good filler in your cast iron and zinc buckets you take to the recycle center.
