[SIZE=4]Have gone from reciprocating side-charger on my DI AR, to Straight Pull (NO GAS). The BCG is a Y/M SS unit drilled and threaded 0.25x28tpi. My new bolt knob is threaded 5/16x24tpi (female). I don't have any machines and only machinist I know is an overworked stressed out marine (boats not jarhead) type.
here is a link to my photobucket album for the build:

thanks for looking

So you need a threaded stud that is 1/4-28 on one end and 5/16-24 on the other end? How long does each section need to be?

Nice work but thhis means curious minds want to know. Why no gas system?. Better accuracy. I once posted on gunboards.com and asked if anyone ever did accuracy improvements on the sks. Got one post by a gent who basically threw away the barrel, and gas system. Had a 1919a7 full sized barrel installed with basically match chamber for the x39 cartridge. Custom stock and was basically a straight pull sks which if I remember right was a yugo action. The groups he posted were very small. Frank

well, living in the communist state of Konnecticut. No gas means no semi-auto. And as my ar is not a preban, no gas means not a nasty black AW. But this is just for punching paper. Looking for a little distance.

Pretty much. Will take some measurements tonight when I get home. The carrier is spotted around the hole for a nice flat secure mount. The knob has some depth before the threads. Not sure how long or if I want a turndown on it. I just know that the one I have is way to f-n stubby!

Here is a sheet with drawings of: Typical bolt knob, current side-charger knob and proposed stud.

I can make that part for you. It will probably be next week before I get around to it. One question. Thr shoulder diameter on the old knob is .302 and you have .300 for the one part of the stud (that screws in BCG). Do you want it .300 or .302?

That looks absolutely SWEET!

. . . Added pics to album of BCG stud attachment area and new stud. Can't wait to get the new stuff put on.
As the weather is warming up some what, might even get one of my buddies to take me to their range as public ranges (outdoor, State run) won't open for at least a month. While it is legal to shoot on my property, there is not enough distance nor a safe direction to shoot:(.

Here it is. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c206/talonhead/No%20Gas/image_zpsikthnscg.jpeg (http://s28.photobucket.com/user/talonhead/media/No%20Gas/image_zpsikthnscg.jpeg.html)
Updated pics in album.
Either need to tap the knob a little deeper, grind a little off the end of the stud to close the gap in the middle, or make a cylinder or cone shim to snug the knob. Any way I go, I'm gonna have to use locktite or rockset to hold the knob on. Probably use some purple locktite on the BCG end to keep it from walking out and drill a small hole in the large diameter portion to insert a long pin to tighten/loosen stud.
ICH, since you did so well, I have a couple of ideas that I need to firm up. I may ask for your help again in design or execution.
Thank you very much for a well made piece (even if it is small and simple).
MikeH

Hmmm... I don't like that gap. The new bolt handle should set flush against that shoulder. Take a hacksaw and cut some of the threads off. Grinding them off will work too. If you do not wish to do either, shoot it back to me and I will part it off of the lathe. But being that those threads will never be seen I would just grind them off or use a cut off wheel on an angle grinder.

A little work and you are there!

Much better. I hope that it holds up to the stresses involved.

Me too. Need to get some range time to break in and tweak it in.
Snow was soooo bad, it took the day off:( Supposed to get much warmer this week, maybe I can get some things moved out of the garage. Have some small welding projects on my gtfd list.
1)Paint removal and sanding of gas forge shell so I can install burner mount, front & back 'porches', legs and burner controls mounting plate. Then I can paint it and start on the inside.
2)Cut down and reeled my AV stand from over top of tv to under tv.
3)modify the legs on my cherry picker hoist so they will fit under the car without it driving up on 6" pads.
And that's just the welding. . . .
