Does anyone have prints of the bottom lug for a contender barrel. I have two different barrels and of course they are not exactly the same.

I am sure I could just make one in the middle of what I have and be OK as both work but would be interested in knowing what they are supposed to be and what tolerance they made them to.

Did TC weld them up close to "right" and then use the pivot pin as a datum point to spin the barrel to correct dimension?

Not trying to be smart, I'm asking.

I am planning on facing and turning the barrel and completely machining the lug. The end of the lug being even with the face of the barrel and TIG welding them at that point. Then indicate the barrel in an ream the chamber and finally machine the barrel to accept the extractor/ejector.

Well have my barrel turned and lug lug machined, now just need to TIG it onto the barrel. Then chamber ream, drill team the pivot hole and machine for the ejector.

Don't forget your pre and post heat. Chromoly or SS? Oh and did I mention Turn it up that's a heavy fusion weld.

Looks good, just what I needed something else to add to my "to do list"

Only other thing is tacking, I would do 4 tacks not at the ends with lower heat. We call these skin tacks an they will be consumed in your main pass. I assume you have a clamp on it, Go back into the preheat for a bit then fuse, flip, fuse. Probabably need 175-200 amps to fuse, pay attention to angle it needs to follow curve of barrel not perpendicular to lug. good luck! I'm a welder by trade. Rod

Thanks Bearcove, I am as well, this ones not my first welding project.

Not a lot to this one, not even close to this little 30,000,000,000 BTU hydrogen/NG, stainless/Inconel burner.

I think you got a grip on it. I have 4 or 5 barrel blanks or pieces that are going that route when I get my shop ready to do it.

Did not find any contender lugs but the Encore lugs are available http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/misc-gunsmith-tools-accessories/853-thompson-center-encore-barrel-lug.html?search_query=barrel+lug&results=4

John, I sent them an email asking about them a few weeks ago when I came across them but never did hear back from them.

I already machined the two I needed though. Test fired the first one a dozen times or so the other day. I will post accuracy results once it is drilled and tapped and has an optic mounted on it.

Jim

A couple of questions,

Did you radius the inside tunnel to better fit the bbl contour?

Where did you get those lugs welded at?

4140 annealed for the lugs?

I have several for my TC/Encores and NEF's,
I need/want to have done.

Outstanding welds!!!!!!!!!!

Don

The first two I started to machined were radiused to fit the barrel but then read a little about lug welds and decided that was not the best idea because there is no fillet, just a thin fusion of the two parts at the outer edge.

It likely would have been fine for the .22lr to use the radiused lug and silver solder them together even though the ejector tunnel takes away 1/3 of the contact surface. I weld more than I solder though.

I have silver soldered many lugs on for old shotgun frames but mostly for low pressure rounds.

Ben, I made some room.

Well I finally had some time to play with this project again and modified a G2 forearm to work with the original frame and mounted it an and optic banged away at some steel until I had it close enough to put a group on paper. Not the best shooting 22 I have or the easiest to bench for groups because of shot to shot movement but the first photo is a 20 shot group at 60 yards (odd distance but just how far it is from the back door to the bullet trap).

For the Kiddo I mounted an aimpoint comp3 I had and even with the suppressor it's shorter than the 510 she has been shooting.

It's very hard not to be a little jealous of being able to machine your own lugs an assemble your own barrels,,,,,,,,

Nice work, not sure how you find the time!

Thanks, there is nothing on TV worth watching anyway might as well do something productive.

Blued it the other day and changed out the aimpoint for a Jpoint, no switches or adjustments needed.

My first thought is to machine the mounting lug to fit the frame, place the barrel in place, then weld it to the lug.
Then I thought a small set of notches to locate the barrel could not hurt before welding.

The problem with that is you couldn't weld the barrel to the lug in place in the frame.
