First off I have tried downloading the aloy calculator several times but I can't seem to make it work with my Android.

What I'm looking for is a mix of #9 mag shot to assumed pure Pb, in the form of roof flashing, and tin to give me a balanced alloy with an air cooled BHN around 16.

Thanks in advance.

10 pounds shot, .5 of tin, zero of pure is 13.5bhn and about as hard as that mix can give...

that 9 shot should be close to 5% antimony so adding the tin is gonna be close to hardball alloy.
so close in fact I'd add some soft lead. [this would cut down on the affects the arsenic in the shot will have on the boolits]
you'll never notice the difference between 12 and 15 bhn.
unless there is a big difference in diameter. [there won't be]

Dang! Thanks Mary, I just thought #9 mag shot was harder than that. I'd hate to break it to my limited stock of lyno but I guess I'll have to. Either that or heat treat some WW and lube 'em instead of PC.

I have a friend that wants me to cast him some boolits for his marlin 444. Said he wants a hard non-expanding boolit for whitetail, I figured the Lee 310 would fit that bill nicely.

Calculator said 4% antimony for #9... 10 pounds shot, .5 tin, 1.5 linotype

Whole lot of large hunting bullets in the Lyman Cast Bullet handbook are made from Lyman #2 and it is only a touch harder at 16 BHN than what MaryB provided. Too hard and bullet can shatter on bone. Not desirable since you want the lead to stay in one chunk for max force. Not to mention bits of lead scattered in the meat is sort of a hassle.

Mix I use has a touch of silver, bumps the BHN to about 17 if my memory serves me. I got a bunch of silver solder scrap from a plumber and it doesn't take much, 1/4 pound in a 10 pound batch.
