I'd recommend 4227 or faster powder to start. Also, my Marlin barrel is close to .360 so those boolits may not fit well. What kind of velocity are you looking for?

I use a healthy dose of 4227 to get about 2400fps with the Ranch dog 190 gr gaschecked. You can search for RD data in the archives.

Im shooting a similar weight plain base bullet an old saeco #351 mould using 12 grs of 2400 with excellent accuracy in my bolt action 35 don't know what the vel is but accuracy is always there with that combo

Aside from what's shown in Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 3rd edition, (mostly with light loads of shotgun powders), the only I find is in the Western Powders data guide. Their Accurate 5744 seems to be favored by some shooters.

I've used 11.0 gr Unique with a Lyman 358315, 200 gr boolit for about 1100 FPS and 1" groups at 100 yds. That was in 2 different Marlin 336's with both of my sons doing the shooting when they were teens (probably competing). Should work for that boolit, too.

That diameter is going to be to small. Just a heads up before you end up w/ a severely leaded barrel.

slugged barrel at .356 i will do again so .358 should be ok

.358" worked for me.

All of mine take at least .359 and work best w/ .360 and larger.

dragon and yodog: are you shooting a microgroove or Ballard barrel, and what are your groove diameters?

They were microgroove. Never slugged them, it just worked.

11gn of Universal... Hmm, anyone else used that? Also, it seems like, at 1100fps, it would work for you cptjack.

what about the rifle powders I mentioned ,3031, 4895 ,h 4350 ,4064,h380,4831,

Your boolit is not gas checked so, velocities must be kept below maybe 1500 FPS or it will cause serious leading. That's using a good lube, too. The powders that you've listed are much better used for higher velocities and could be dangerous if reduced too much. Better to use a faster pistol or shotgun powder that's not position sensitive. Just wait till you find out how many boolits you can shoot with just a pound of powder at those lower velocities! Have fun with em!

Mine is a 1960's issue Micro groove You need a fat boolit; I will not shoot less then .360"!

what about the rifle powders I mentioned ,3031, 4895 ,h 4350 ,4064,h380,4831,
I would call them Jacketed powders:razz:

4895 and 27.0 grains ought to give you a good starting point. 28 grains of 3031 also would work, but the other powders you list are a little too slow for the 35 Rem.

Lyman listed 28 grains of 3031 for 1580 FPS as a start load for their 200 grain 358-315 in their 44th edition with 39.0 grains as their accuracy load and 40 grains as an absolute top end. This is with gas checks, but that start load should be doable with either 4895 or 3031 and your plain base boolit. You may be able to drop down a little more, as according to Richard Lee, 4895 is useful down to 60% of a full charge load. With a top end load of 36 grains, that would allow you to drop down to 21.6 grains of 4895.
Were I you, I would start at 22 grains of 4895, load three cartridges, and work up a half grain at a time until I either got satisfactory accuracy, I hit 28 grains, or I had to scrape the lead out of my barrel.

( I'm picking door number three, but you may get lucky.):-)

You might want to add the IMR or H to the above suggestions so that it is clear.

I use 36gr IMR 3031 with a Ranch Dog 190gr gc boolit. Very accurate in my MG Marlin, but I'm not sure of the velocity. Since you are not using a gc, I'd start around 28gr.
