New Caster has lead source question

Has anyone tried lead sheeting that's used as coping betwen the seems of the stone walls of old buildings? It was salvage from a roofing,construction job.

I've cast some fishing weights but I am afraid to gum up my lee furnace. It seems OK, no signs of zinc. There was some ash in the bottom of the pot but I believe that it was from the adheasive compound on the sheeting. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum !! Since that is close to pure lead, you probably need something to add antimony & a little tin to the mix.

20/1 would work in your pistol calibers quite well, elmer used 16/1

Thanks for the help thought it was good and close to pure but you guys helped me out. I have some wheel weights and a 15$!!!!! 1lb spool of 50/50.
I will be shooting 303 and 8mm at 15-1800fps. What should i go with? TIM

I make a point of NEVER smelting in my Lee 20 lb pot.
So far, never a leak.
You are going to have to add some stuff to the melt with pure lead. 95/5 lead free solder is a great source of tin.
If it were me, I would go with mostly WWs and add the lead into the mix in limited amounts. I go with WWs and tin, then buffer with the lead. I run 9lbs WWs and 1lb tin. That gives a lot of lattitude in pouring. At least as far as I have seen. My .45ACP loves that mix.
With the .303, I am working on doing paper patching. I have been shown several ways. Size it to .304, and two turns 16lb 'puter paper, and .308 with two turns tracing paper. I am going to directly try 20rds of 9/1 WW mix at .313 with gas check. I have the Lee 155gn ogive mold, which lists at .312, but measures at .313.
In the paper patching portion of this forum, I have a thread started pretty much asking what you are getting at with your .303. A lot of members have really made some comments that are making me think.
With a paper patch, I believe you can use the roof lead.

that 95/5 solder is about 15.00 at home depot etc,
if you keep the velocitys below 15-1600 ww's with 2% tin that is 2lbto 98 lb ww's
and your boolits fit your rifles well [width and length to fit the throat]
should be okay with either g/c or not unless the boolit is designed for one then use it.
if you water drop your ww's they will be harder as well as a 50/50 mix of ww and pure.
straight ww's water quenched will be about 18 bhn and you can go with more velocity.
or cut 50/50 your bhn is more like 14-16 which is still hard enough to get you some velocity

Check e-bay for bar solder. There is usually some old stock or cheaper stuff floating around if you want the new stuff. Item # 110238077161 on e-bay (not my auction) is for 2 # of 63/37 and has a buy it now for $9 + $9 for shipping. Not great but not bad..... OH and there are 420 available in the dutch auction.

Whatch which paper you use for paper patching. Computer paper (most) has some clay added. Not good for your barrel. Try using 25 % cotton long fiber paper.
